BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. - Just because actors used to seeing their faces in close-ups 30 feet high are turning to television in search of projects that put character before car chases doesn't mean some of their TV counterparts don't still suffer from screen envy. BEVERLY HILLS, Calif.- Who's afraid of the FCC? Two months before the premiere of Ken Burns' series, "The War," PBS CEO Paula Kerger still isn't sure. BY THE TIME you read this, I'll be in Beverly Hills, Calif., hunkered down at the Hilton for the Television Critics Association's summer meetings, a 2 1/2-week endurance challenge that one of the group's charter members long ago dubbed a "death march with cocktail parties." THE CLOSER. Corey Reynolds plays Sgt. David Gabriel, who occasionally bumps heads with his boss, Deputy Police Chief Brenda Johnson (Kyra Sedgwick), over his by-the-book approach to solving crime. JOHN FROM CINCINNATI. 9 p.m. Sunday, HBO. PEOPLE KEEP asking how I'm getting along with "John From Cincinnati," David Milch's metaphysical new surfing series. IF I SAY that "Coma," an HBO film about people struggling to recover from traumatic brain injuries, is less likely to put viewers to sleep than almost anything I've seen lately, it's not as big a knock on summer TV as it sounds. "I DON'T MEAN to be rude, but . . ." If "American Idol" judge Simon Cowell has said it once, he's said it a thousand times - he even used the disclaimer for the title of his autobiography. That's the story, at least, that filmmaker Ken Burns is telling on his promotional tour for "The War," his World War II opus premiering on PBS Sept. 23. EVERY SEPTEMBER since 1995, I've invited a group of readers to spend an evening watching fall TV pilots with me here at the Daily News. WILL TRAVELER lives. That I know that, or anything else, about what's going on in ABC's escaped-Yalies drama, "Traveler," just shows how easily I can be sucked in by any cockeyed conspiracy that happens to come along. IF IT FEELS as if everybody wants to be a star this summer but the stars themselves - they apparently just want to race cars - you've probably been watching too much network television.
