Here's the ultimate political man-bites-dog story: An heir to the world's greatest oil fortune -- and a Republican to boot -- spending nearly two million bucks to defeat George W. Bush in November.
And what's almost as unlikely is that this gusher sprouted right here in the Philadelphia area, in the upscale Main Line suburb of Berwyn.
John A. "Jay" Harris IV and his wife Lawrie have given $1,714,000 to those "independent" 527 advocacy groups -- yeah, the same groups that Bush wants to ban as soon as those Swift Boat veterans are done fragging John Kerry's character. That makes the Harrises not only the largest 527 committee donors in Pennsylvania, but the fifth largest in the whole US of A.
Never heard of Jay Harris? Us neither. He's said to be a retired investment banker and an heir to the Standard Oil fortune that harkens back to John D. Rockefeller. He's also said to be a Republican, but he has a funny way of showing it.
In the current election cycle, Harris and his wife have given nearly $1.48 million to the League of Conservation Voters, $196,000 to other environmental 527s like the Sierra Club, and even $10,000 to the fiercely anti-Bush MoveOn.org
A check of what little's been published about Harris over the years suggests it's not really that surprising that he's supporting Kerry. An organization funded by the philanthropist called the Changing Horizons Fund has awarded grants in recent years to the Center for Food Safety and the National Coalition Against the Misuse of Pesticides. The fund is linked to the liberal Tides Foundation, a group that's drawn some scrutiny for its ties to Teresa Heinz Kerry.
Harris has also reportedly founded something called the Gas Guzzler Campaign -- which contrary to its name is not an effort to get folks to rush out and purchase Hummers.
We tried to reach Harris in Berwyn to ask him about his political giving, but no one was picking up the phone. Efforts to reach him through the Center for Food Safety also failed.
We doubt he would have granted Campaign Extra! an interview, anyway. Those who've met Harris say he's a donor in a low-key Quaker style that is so common here in Pennsylvania.
"He's just low-key, very soft-spoken," one prominent environmentalist told us on background. "He has no interest in crediting himself."
