Gay, but not happy

Last week, Campaign Extra! told you the story of Jesse Walters, a Philadelphia leader of the Log Cabin Republicans, the leading gay GOP group. Walters, disenchanted with George W. Bush, quit his seat as a delegate to the RNC and said he would vote for John Kerry in November.

Now, it seems that Walters was just a little ahead of the pack. The national Log Cabin Republicans board voted last night -- by a whopping 22-2 margin -- not to endorse Bush for re-election. Their reason was largely the president's stand on gay marriage. "Some will accuse us of being disloyal," said executive director Patrick Guerriero. "It was actually the White House who was disloyal" to what it claims were 1 million gays and lebsbians who voted for Bush in 2000.

Unlike Walters, the national group won't back Kerry, either. Instead, it plans to concentrate this fall on getting Republicans who've been supportive of gay rights elected to Congress.
