The freepers are making a big fuss now, claiming the Killian documents are forgeries, based on the fact that they are in a proportional font (most 1972 typewriters did not use proportional font) and superscript "th".

The superscript is a smaller font than the regular font, making it seem more likely that the documents were made using a computer or word processor and then xeroxed many times to look older.

So, I'm wondering what the deal with these documents really is. I hate to jump on board with them as facts if they are really forgeries.

The IBM Selectric II did include proportional font and superscript "th", and was in standard use throughout the military and in many business offices at that time. End of story.

Well, in fact some proportional typewriters did exist as early as 1941. I worked in a Navy office in 1976, and we certainly had them by then, I had one on my desk. But that was a few years later.

But I don't know about small superscript "th". I remember, to get superscript, we would manually raise the carriage, type, and lower it again. But it wouldn't be in a smaller size.

It's hard to say that Kerry has less of a public record than Bush; Kerry's been in high office for a considerably longer time.

Or, to take another angle: the Swifties For Bush attacked Kerry's Vietnam service bc Kerry made that an issue by discussing it. Ok, Im fine with that in principle (although not with the manner in which the campaign of the Swifties has been carried out). Id actually like to see a good pro-con discussion of Kerry's testimony in 1971 that didn't involve blatant misinterpretations of the Treason Clause...

Likewise, Bush's campaign is about how we're supposed to trust him, how he has returned honor & dignity to the WH. It's supposed to be about how he understands protecting America in a way that others don't.
So I think that he's opened himself up to questions about his character, his honesty, and his real commitment to defend America.

About the "fake" memo: rppa says that smaller case characters were available on the Selectric, the only typewriter that could possibly make half sized superscripts. The rest of us rolled the platen down a little bit and typed using the same sized letters. So I checked out the Selectric typeballs at:

To type the superscripts I saw on TV one would have to start with a 12 pitch ball, rotate the platen 1/2 notch, remove the 12 pitch ball and plug in a (currently non-existent) 6 pitch ball, type the two characters, rotate the platen back, remove the 6 pitch ball, replace the 12 pitch and continus typing.

Sure, just what any clerk-typist would do who's in a hurry.

I would like to know how many Purple Hearts are required before we achieve energy independence and break our economy's addiction to foreign oil. I'm seeing lots of seniors getting hit with 17% Medicaid bill increases due to the internal procedures of the Texas Air National Guard. Since the superscript "th" also appears on Bush's undisputed "chronological listing of service", clearly clerk-typists did do superscripts.

But it wasn't as hard as all that.

It was possible to get the ordinal suffixes instead of the fractions 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4.   Pressing one key got you one symbol consisting of two letters in a smaller font.

And having typed a plenitude both of college papers and newsletter copy, I know the easiest way to superscript anything on any typewriter is simply to roll the platen back half a line while you type it.

Specifically on Selectrics: switching typeballs back and forth was how you got italics, symbols, and other typefaces — useful, and not hard to do.

I did a lot of that, especially for the newsletters — to visually mark off header (large sanserif), body (medium serif), blockquote or footnote (small serif), and emphasized or foreign-language text (italics).   It made the text easier to follow, more visually interesting, and more like a professionally-published periodical, than text in a single font.

That said, these memos are in a single font.   If the machine had a key for small "th", then the typing element need not have been swapped at all.   So it's possible the typist did not even use a Selectric, but rather some single-font typewriter.

Centering a letterhead is a problem you only need solve once.   After that, you use tab settings to get over to the right starting positions for each line.

bush'es guard record is not in and of itself that important to anything that is going on today. However the fact that he will not come clean about what he was doing then is relevant because it speaks directly to his character. The White House has said (I believe) on three different occasions (I just read this morning that more records are coming from the W.H.) that all relevant documents have been provided and each time they have somehow found more documents.
bush knows what he was doing and he refuses to come clean so what else should anyone think other than he won't say because he is embarassed to tell or maybe what he was doing was illegal.

These Gillian documents may be challenged as to their authenticity but they are not challenged as to their contents or the fact that GW won't answer the questions about their contents.

Kerry did not invite the scrutiny that he has had to endure about his military record. Kerry put his record out there as part of his resume. He answered all questions and backed his answers up with documentation and eye witnesses. You can believe him or not but at least he answered.
Let's see if GW can do the same??? He can't even get anyone to lie for him about whether he was in Alabama or not doing his duty. All we ever get is that GW was Honorably discharged over and over again. What do you think would be the reponse if Kerry just said the same thing?

In the early '70s I used an IBM Selectric, but I well remember coveting my supervisor's IBM Executive, which was a key-strike model typewriter and put out beautiful proportional spaced text. So although those documents could be real, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if they were fake and put out by Karl Rove to make the whole issue appear bogus.

Another interesting item is that Bush now appears to have been awarded the National Defense Service Medal. This first appears as far as I can determine in the 2004 records in a summary. It does not appear anywhere else in his DD-214 (for active duty training of 1 month and 11 days) nor does it appear in his National Guard discharge record. If he was only active duty for training and the rest of his time was National Guard and reserves, I do not believe he is eligible for that award. And if you think that's no big deal, ask a few cold war vets about their efforts to get approval for the NDSM for service between 1954 and 1960 or between 1974 to 1990.
