Remember what was going on at the height of the whole Swift Boat Veterans for the Truth controversy? The Bush White House has always maintained that John Kerry's Vietnam record was honorable, and so reporters and politicians -- including Bush supporter John McCain -- asked George W. Bush if he would repudiate the Swift Boat ads.
He wouldn't. As USA Today wrote on Aug. 27: "Bush has declined to specifically condemn the Swift Boat ads. He has called on Kerry to join him in opposing all such groups, most of which have financed anti-Bush ads using unregulated donations." Meanwhile, evidence emerged of ties between the Bush campaign and the anti-Kerry swiftees, including a lawyer who'd worked for both camps.
And now Campaign Extra! has learned that when President Bush flew to the Philadelphia suburbs to campaign last Thursday, he held his rally at the business of a major donor to the Swift Boat Veterans for the Truth. The Bush campaign said it selected Byers Choice Ltd., a maker of Christmas figurines in Colmar, Pa., as a way of showing its support for small business.
"They decided to take risk," Bush said around the same time that several hecklers were removed from the event, one pulled by her hair. "They hired people wisely, they invested wisely, and their company is growing. And I appreciate the contribution they made."
So did the Bush campaign appreciate -- or know of -- the $2,500 contribution that Byers made to Swift Boat Veterans for the Truth on Aug. 20, about two weeks before the rally was scheduled? Byers' contribution came after the first round of commericials. They questioned whether Kerry earned the combat medals he won serving as a Swift Boat commander during the Vietnam War -- a claim contradicted by official U.S. Navy records.
Byers -- who won an award from the Bush-led U.S. Small Business Administration, has reportedly given at least $30,000 to GOP causes, including -- in the last year -- the Republican National Committee and Sens. Arlen Specter and Rick Santorum.
Efforts to reach Byers over the weekend through business associates and family members were not successful.
An examination of local donors to Swift Boat Veterans for the Truth shows some familiar Philadelphia names. The best known is local ad guru and former Sam Katz campaign strategist Brian Tierney, who gave $1,000, also on Aug. 20. John Templeton, the mutual-fund manager and Christian-oriented philanthropist from Bryn Mawr, gave $5,000 on Aug. 2.

That's the type of hard-hitting reporting I've come to expect from a paper that, six months ago, had a column written by a horse. (The horse did seem to have a much higher IQ than most of your reporters and everyone on the editorial board though).
Jeez, and you guys wonder why most people that buy the Daily News just read the sports section and then throw it in the trash.

The Byers family contributes more money to charity than most, if not, all companies. To associate Byers' Choice with anything underhanded is jsut bad reporting. If it were good reporting then they would have known that the Republican Commitee in the area is the one that ran the visit and not the Byers. If you owned a business and the SBA and/or the President of the United States wanted to honor you and give you an award for your life's work I'm sure nobody would say no! He is our President! Right or wrong bad or good he is our President. Sorry...can't fault them for anything here.
The Daily News has proven, once again, it is worthy only of the bottom of the bird cage or beneath my puppy's feet.

Personal contibutions to ANYTHING is a personal choice of the individual. Taking the author's point of view, would that mean George Sorros (sp?) should have no contact with the Kerry camp? Funny how a few thousand dollars from a few people can be so upsetting to some on the left when Sorros (again sp?) has contibuted MILLIONS to the same type of political ads.

What is proven by any of this?
That the Republican Party is horrifyingly talented at advertising their candidates. While we bicker over these piece of crap details we are missing the details that matter a lot more.
Did the Republican Party knowingly help the Swift Boat Campaign? Wouldn't surprise me. Are there people out there gonzo enough about Bush to do it on their own, without help? Wouldn't surprise me either.
Does all this make the Bush administration a bunch of liars? I'd say it would require a much better set of examples than "They helped people talk shit about Kerry on TV."
But I'd also say we have that evidence. I feel I've been lied to since he sat his ignorant butt down behind the desk in the oval office.
There was a phrase that I heard a few years back: "If you have to justify your actions by comparing them to others it proves your own actions too weak to stand by themselves."
The actions Bush has taken have been questionable. The majority of his gains in the polls are a result of negative campaigning as a result.
I guess my point is this: If he didn't have anything to do with the Swift Boat ads then he would have done something to the same effect his own self. He couldn't afford not to.

A lot of fuss is over why President Bush doesn't specifically condemn the advertisements. Well, America is supposed to be fair... if MoveOn.org decides to spread half-truths and misleading statements against President Bush, then why can't the swift boat veterans make statements (which are probably at least a little more reliable) and do the same? It's fair game, and to condemn one ad while not condemning all the others would be disgraceful.

He's not putting a stop to it because it's doing wonders for his campaign. Look at the numbers he's gotten since all this started. Well, look at what Kerry has lost, rather. There's still damage to do and as long as it works he isn't gonna stop it.
Now, if SBV were killing his popularity he'd drop them like a bad habit. We all know that. So don't give me 'fairness' because politics has never been about fair. Our voting Bush into office still isn't even surely fair.
So this is what it comes down to: If Bush didn't do it, Bush would have. End of story.
Now how about we look at something more significant.

I do remember in psych class that my teacher stated that most people have an attention span of less than a half hour. The Bush campaign is capitalizing on this because they know that people do not research anything further. If someone who wasn't Clinton -- let's say me, just for the sake of argument -- was dragged into court by one of my employees in a sexual harassment lawsuit, and I materially lied on the witness stand in exactly the same fashion as Clinton did; would you be just as quick to defend my lying as just "about a blowjob"?
Or would you think that in that case, my employee had some right to have me not lie about things material to her sexual harassment lawsuit?
Presuming that you *do* think she does ... well, why do you hold President Clinton and I to different standards of acceptable truthfulness when in court for sexual harassment, then?
The whole Byers thing is nothing really. It is a sideshow at best. We all know that the swift boat of fools are liars who have hated Kerry for 30 years. It is simple really: One went, volunteered twice, won three purple hearts, a bronze and a silver star, and the official Naval records back up that story..
The other used power, wealth and privilege to avoid Vietnam and then was too durgged out and embalmed in alcohol to take his flight physical, wasting a cool million of the tax payers money. He has lied about his service for years and the official records do not back up his story. Not one credible person has stepped forward to say that they served with George Bush, the son of a Congressman, in Alabama or Mass.
This would not matter so much had Bush atleast learned the lessons of Vietnam in some other way than being there, but he did not. There seems to be a pattern of deceit with this president and his family and his cabinet

No.
My point is that they spent more time and effort researching Clinton's scandal than Bush's excuses for starting a war. Bush has now, in effect, killed over 1,000 US citizens and God knows how many Iraqis. He didn't have much of a plan ready to stabilize Iraq once he'd run Saddam out which makes you wonder.
My point is that Bush has literally gotten away with murder and it's gotten less attention than Bill Clinton's scandal involving a White House intern.
I don't believe that the Republicans publicly crucifying Bill did so for the sake of the country. I believe they did it for themselves. If Kerry gets into office, they'll search for something dirty and feed off of it like vermin until they gnaw the man's career away too.
