Roughly two years ago, Michael Karloutsos didn’t even live in Philadelphia. He was 1,000 miles away in Chicago, trying to get Paul Vallas elected governor of Illinois as a Democrat.
Today, he's our city’s top fundraiser for the GOP’s President Bush.
Karloutsos — a political consultant turned fundraiser — is one of the Bush Pioneers, about 500 supporters of the president tasked with raising at least $100,000 for his campaign.
In a list of local Republican bigwigs dominated by the usual suspects such as lawyer-turned-lobbyist David Girard-diCarlo and wheeler-dealer Manny Stamatakis, Karloutsos is the least known of Pennsylvania’s 12 Bush Pioneers or "Rangers" (who have a goal of raising $200,000).
And he's the only one of those 12 to live in the heavily Democratic city. The 33-year-old Karloutsos and his wife Anastasia bought a $365,000 home in South Philadelphia this spring.
Why is Karloutsos, who's done political work for a number of Democrats including the late Massachusetts Sen. Paul Tsongas — who held the seat taken over by John Kerry — such an avid supporter of Bush?
He said he’s been taken with Bush ever since he and Alex Spanos, an owner of the San Diego Chargers, traveled to Austin to meet the then-Texas governor in 1999.
"Aside from what everybody talks about, he's a very engaging guy, a very personable man," Karloutsos said. "He had a clear vision at that point...I knew he had the goods to be the president of the United States."
Karloutsos said he's exceeded his $100,000 target for Bush, although he doesn’t know the exact amount he’s raised. Much of that, he said, was at a Washington event this spring for what he called "the ethnic communities." Karloutsos, who grew up in the New York City area, is the son of a prominent official in the Greek Orthodox Church.
He is extremely close to Vallas, whom he says he drove here during his job interviews to become the CEO of the Philadelphia school system in 2002. When Vallas came to Philadelphia, so did Karloutsos.
He said his now-wife was a recent college graduate and acqaintance whom he recuited to work for the school district. He said his courtship with Anastasia Karloutsos — who earns $47,539 in the Office of School and Community Relations — didn't begin until after she arrived here.
Karloutsos set up his own business, MAK Consulting LLC, from his home. His first client was the Philadelphia School District, which has awarded him $254,000 in contracts or expenses since August 2002 for corporate fundraising. MAK now also works closely with Wachovia Bank.
He doesn’t think his work for Bush will hurt his success as a consultant in a city that is 6-1 Democratic. "I've been able to walk the line between Democrats and Republicans," Karloutsos said.
