Debunking the Kinko's fax myth

Those right-wing naysayers are at again -- still trying to cast doubt on those 1972 memos from Lt. Col. Jerry Killian proving that George W. Bush failed to fulfill his obligations to the Texas Air National Guard. In recent days, these partisans have desperately tried to grasp at any straw -- proportional spacing, kerning, fonts that only exist on Microsoft Word -- in a desperate effort to show these documents are fake.

In the process, they’ve unearthed dozens of so-called “experts” who claim the memos are fraudulent. Never mind that a couple of actual experts have found that it was indeed possible that Killian typed the memos on a rare, exorbantly expensive IBM typewriter that could have had a font somewhat like that in 1972.

And if the memos were possible, then they must not be fakes.

Now comes the latest head-fake from the right. Some people are trying to make a big deal out of the fact that the Killian memos apparently were faxed to CBS News from a Kinko’s in Abilene, Texas -- like this is some kind of proof that the memos must be bogus! In fact, in just five minutes of research on the Internet, Campaign Extra! hs been able to show that not only was it possible for Killian to have sent a fax from Kinko’s in 1972 -- but it is highly likely that he did.

First of all, did you know that that faxing was invented by a Scottish mechanic named Alexander Bain, all the way back in 1843? That means that the technology to send a fax existed for some 129 years before the Killian memos were written!

In fact, read this passage from the Web: “For several years, the fax machine was expensive and difficult to operate; perhaps explaining why it was never used much by businesses prior to the 1980’s. In 1966, the Xerox Company introduced a smaller model that would be more accessible to users by sending its transmissions over existing telephone lines. You could send a document from one fax machine to another in about 6 minutes this way, this is slow for today, but back then it represented a significant step toward greater technology..”

But would Killian have used such unusual and highly expensive technology in the early 1970s? You bet. In fact, several unnamed associates of Killian, who died in 1984, said the National Guard officer had a real love for high-tech gadgetry. “Sending memos by an unwieldy, bulky and slow machine rather than drop them in the mail -- that sounds just like Jerry!,” one said.

Ah, but now you’re wondering if Kinko’s existed in 1972. Again, the facts are clearly on the side of verifying the memos. A University of Southern California graduate named Paul Orfalea opened the first Kinko’s in Santa Barbara in 1970 -- two years before the Killian memos were written and faxed. By the end of the 1970s, there were some 80 Kinko’s. Is it possible that one of these was in Abilene, Texas? Not only is it possible, but it’s highly likely!

Once again, the right wingers who’ll say anything to get George W. Bush four more years in the White House have been caught in a big lie. When will they finally acknowledge that these memos -- written in a rare font on an expensive typewriter and transmitted by an experimental technology through a chain of stores that had just opened (and newly discovered 32 years later) -- are clearly authentic?
