A story in the New York Times with a really bad headline has some really good news for the John Kerry campaign. The headline says: "Both Parties See a Big Increase in New Voters."
Yet directly underneath, the story begins: "A sweeping voter registration campaign in heavily Democratic areas has added tens of thousands of new voters to the rolls in the swing states of Ohio and Florida, a surge that has far exceeded the efforts of Republicans in both states, a review of registration data shows."
With the polls still showing a close race -- maybe a dead heat, maybe a small Bush lead -- it's becoming more and more likely the voter turnout will decide the race. Taking that further, voter registration is the key. Both sides are spending tens of millions on getting their "people" to the polls. And voter registration could also confound the already befuddled pollsters, since new voters are not going to be counted as likely voters.
So....under that unfortunate "fair and balanced" heading, the NYT story by Ford Fessenden (a former colleague we have a lot of respect for) then goes on to show how in two of the three most critical states, Ohio and Florida, it's really just the Democrats seeing the "big increase."
To wit:
"The analysis by The New York Times of county-by-county data shows that in Democratic areas of Ohio - primarily low-income and minority neighborhoods - new registrations since January have risen 250 percent over the same period in 2000. In comparison, new registrations have increased just 25 percent in Republican areas."
"A similar pattern is apparent in Florida: in the strongest Democratic areas, the pace of new registration is 60 percent higher than in 2000, while it has risen just 12 percent in the heaviest Republican areas."
It that truly holds, then (warning: only diehard Philadelphia Phillies fans will get this allusion): "Put those states in the win column for the fightin' Dems."

UPDATE: The initial headline that appeared on the early, online version was changed slightly for the print edition. It now reads: "A Big Increase of New Voters in Swing States." Unlike the first headline, it's technically accurate -- but still hides the actual point of the story, which is Democrats outregistering Republicans. Is this the "CBS Syndrome," or just lousy headline writing?
Was in Ohio that the Dems were registering dead people to vote?
The question that comes to mind, after the 2000 exection, is will the new voters know how to vote?

I have been registering people in the Orlando, FL area since May.
I have personally registered over 1200 people. My office has registered over 20,000.
The reason I took this job was because of the 2000 election. I was working in the polls, which I usually do. For the first time, I saw voters turned away from the polls, not allowed to vote. Then, I found out that tens of thousands of people in Florida were not allowed to vote. Worse yet, in districts with high minority populations, thousands of votes were simply thrown away.
Believe me, it had NOTHING to do with whether or not people were smart enough to vote or ballot configuration and everything to do with voter fraud.
I was ashamed of my state and my country.
And it's still going on.
Jeb Bush and Katherine Harris made sure to steal the last election and Jeb Bush and Glenda Hood are on track to try and do it again.
So, I get up every day and register more people.
And I am determined to get as many of them out to vote as I can.

It's probably right. But if the final polls in Ohio show Bush with the edge,then how hard will it be for someone to switch some votes from Kerry's column to the Bush column since they are using Diebold's paperless touch sreens to vote on.If the final vote agrees with the last polls that showed Bush with the lead then the Dems demanding a recount will be dismissed as whining. It's an electronic contingency plan that insures the desired result for Bush,if he needs it.

I love it. The Democrats are swearing the Republicans stole Florida and are vowing to prevent it happen again. The Republican motto is, "If it's not close, they can't cheat." They're talking about the Democrats, of course.
Aside from wondering what a Marian would conclude about the situation, how does one prevent voter fraud from either side? Our democratic system only works if the votes are clean.
I recall reading a couple of years ago that two states, Alaska and Maine had more people vote than were registered to vote. My memory is a bit fuzzy on this, so I could have the states wrong. But if it is true, that’s worrisome.
I ask again, how do we prevent voter fraud?

Saturdays are the low point of journalism, despite the fact that news happens all week. It has since been corrected.
I have no idea what John Chandler is talking about. There are far more people who will resort to terrorism thanks to the Bush administration's myopic foreign policy than there were targeting the US four years ago. Bomb thy neighbor?
And roooth, I thank you for your efforts. We all win when more people turn out to vote, regardless of party affiliation.

Like the person who says that "a vote for Kerry is a vote for terrorists". And under whose watch did 9/11 happen? And who diverted resources from the search for al Queda in Afghanistan to fulfill the neocon's dream of oil domination under the guise of an "imminent" threat from Iraq. And speaking of Iraq, if Repugs believe that Hussein was responsible why is he not being interrogated and charged for the crime since we now have him in custody??? Puh-lezzzz.... you guys don't really believe all those lies, you just want as many gullible fools to believe so you guys can win and while the Religious Right put their rubber stamping judges in our courts to dismantle the rights of women and minorites, the Corporate Right can dismantle environmental and labor protections... ah how you people "love" America! Nope, any fool can see that a vote for Bush is a vote for terrorists... now that he has made Iraq a breeding ground for new terrorists and a poster child for Osama bin Laden's campaign of why Americans should be hated and reviled by the world's one billion Muslims.
