There's a new Daily News/CN8 Keystone Poll out in the newspaper (what is this?) this morning, and shows what most people have been seeing for the past several weeks, that the state has been trending ever so mildly for John Kerry. He leads by five points among likely voters (49-44) and among registered voters (51-46), and with undecideds breaking for the Democrat there's not much time for President Bush to catch up.
Our writer Erin Einhorn captures the real story, which is that Bush's appeal to fear -- as dramatized by the "Wolves" TV ad -- is just not working. The voters who are most scared about another terrorist attack are voting for Bush -- a whopping 82 percent of them.
But those people are only about one-quarter of the electorate. The majority of the Pennsylvania electorate (52 percent) cares most about one of three things -- the economy, health-care, or the war in Iraq. In each of those areas, nearly two-thirds, or more, are with Kerry.
It's amazing: Bush really is becoming more and more like "the Spanish Inquisition" on Monty Python -- amongst their weaponry are such diverse elements as: fear (vote for Bush or the terrorists will kill you), surprise (hey, October's not over yet), ruthless efficiency (ruthless, yes -- efficient, no), an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope (on abortion and stem cells, anyway), and nice red uniforms (ever see the women at a Bush rally?).
UPDATE: An earlier link to the F&M Web site for poll results was to their next to last poll, from early October. We saw the news release on their homepage and, thinking like deadline reporters, assumed since it was under "news" that it was the latest one. But everything in the item and the DN story is, and was, correct.
Ah the "wolves" ad. I think it speaks volumes. Mainly that the Republicans and the current administration see the U.S. and its voters as SHEEP to be led.
The real "wolves," Mr. President, Mr. Rove, and Mr. Cheney, are YOU.
The rest of us are feeling mighty preyed upon, and it's not coming from outside.
Posted by: MizTaz at October 26, 2004 11:33 AMThe REAL terrorists are in the WH. Here's the evidence, - using the FBI definition!
GW BUSH - World's LEADING Terrorist!
The Fear Mongering of Liberal Hobgoblins
The Bush campaign has been obsessed with scaring little old ladies and
children with rhetoric of a dangerous Troll hiding under the bridge. The
oogity-bogity of Dick Cheney saying, a vote for Kerry is a vote for nuclear
holocaust, is particularly impressive.
Bush, in an ABC interview broadcast Monday, was asked about the possibility
of a terrorist attack on the United States before the election, a chilling
"Here's Johnny" theme the administration has repetitively used to the point
of cliché.
In the interview, Bush negated Cheney's scare tactics saying, "We don't
have actionable intelligence to say there's an attack, and of course if we
did, we'd be moving heaven and earth to stop it," Bush said. Given the PDB
report of October 2001 saying, "Bin Laden plans to attack in the United
States," the results of 9/11 prove otherwise.
Why then with all the fear mongering on Bush's behalf?
Quite simple, the Bush administration believes Americans are lily-livered
cowards. They think they can bully people with fear on the one hand, and
lead them to safety with the other.
Such thinking makes about as much sense as those slasher-horror flix with
scantily clad virgins who get spooked out of their cabin and go running
into the moon-lit woods, all in separate directions. The paralyzing terror
of these vacuous young co-ed's, with ripped T-shirts voluptuously attentive
while wet and dirty, only feed the hunger of the serial murderer hiding in
the shadows with taunting whispers "Kill, kill, kill…ha, ha, ha."
The Slasher then irrigates hysteria by taking human parts of his victim and
showing it to the surviving teen-herd with a "your next" message implied or
literal. This is done to direct the panic toward a final entrapment where
the lambs can be slaughtered, and to find out at the very end, the one
person least suspect--is the murderer. (Usually the revenge of some
social-retard always teased and never got laid.)
In the Rovian world, this is sound political strategy. If it worked for
Freddy and Chucky, it should work for Georgie too. In the fantasia of Karl
Rove, American's are cowards easily picked off and herded into the warm
bosom of their own demise. Whispers from the shadows of "kill, kill,
kill…terrorist, terrorist, terrorist" allow the predators in the Bush camp
fulfill their vampire hunger for human blood around the globe.
The Rovian necromancy of those ritually sacrificed on their watch and the
bones of 9/11 victims, have become props of fear on the trail to discredit
John Kerry, with "your next--if you continue down this road."
It happens because Bush thinks all Americans are "gurly-men" who will go
screaming into the woods at the next color coded terror alert, begging God
"in the name of George W. Bush" to save them.
Bush succubae on the other hand, like Queen Peroxide in all her pie-dodging
glory, stand at the edge of the woods supplicating erect nipples (that have
the supernatural powers to cause frost-bite), screaming neo-Nazi rhetoric
of "kill them all" at an orgasmic pitch creaming for genocide.
This Rovian fangoria has been largely effective, because the American
public has given the Bush administration the ability to do it. No one can
intimidate you without your permission and nothing makes the hype-driven
zombies on the Right feel more alive than be scared to death.
Those Americans who have the testicular fortitude to call the Bush
Administration's bluff already know the real cowards sit in the White
House. If the American people on the whole ever figured it out, the
Hunchback of the West Wing wouldn't be able to cry "sanctuary" fast enough
before the villagers came a-knockin' with torches and pitchforks.
America, it's time to stop running like a little girl and call out the
Nosferatu cowards with the cold-dead-hearts and send them back to Hell, or
worse…Iraq.
I am sorry, but I never did get the continuing fear thing. As months and months passed, after 9/11, with nothing but alerts, later proved to be based on absolutely nothing, why would anyone remain afraid? How many times can they pull this, effectively? Fear, even if one actually feels it, can only work for so long. Ask any student of the brain and human behavior.
I never was afraid. I can understand why the people in New York and surrounding areas were, but I live in "Nowhere" Georgia." Why would Osama hit us? I cannot believe that all these people living in other "Nowheres" around America were really all that afraid.
Now, if Osama had really wanted to terrify ordinary Americans and truly effect the American economy, he would have sent suicide bombers into selected Walmart and Target stores.
If people really have been quaking all this time, then I think we are in serious trouble in this country.
Posted by: TWF at October 26, 2004 12:34 PMHey why is this poll getting so much attention when it is 3 weeks old. From the poll:
"The poll was conducted by telephone between September 30 and Oct. 4, and included interviews with 594 registered voters in Pennsylvania"
Posted by: neodem at October 26, 2004 12:48 PMGood example of the liberal mindset there, TWF.
Did you ever think that these people are worried about a terrorist attack ANYWHERE in the US?
That, maybe, even though they shop at Target or Wal-Mart and live in East Bumfuck that maybe, just maybe, they didn't really like watching 3000 of their fellow Americans get incinerated and don't wanna see it again?
After 9-11, did all of those donations that came pouring in only come from NY and DC?
I mean, even as a Bush voter, i think he's overplaying the terror thing a wee bit, but it is possible for someone to be concerned about another terror attack on the US and still realize that it probably won't happen in their town.
Posted by: jeff at October 26, 2004 01:00 PMI guess this is a little off topic, but here goes.
I would contend this is NOT a war on terror. It is a war against Islamic Fascism. It is a war against those whose goal is a world wide conversion to Islam. Since the enemy cannot match us on the battlefield they have resorted to terrorist tactics. Iraq is currently the center of gravity of that war. I would liken our success or failure in Iraq to the importance of the battle for Wake Island in WWII.
Although the MSM rarely reports it, there is good news in Iraq. Little by little our magnificent troops are standing up an Iraqi army that can fight like a western one. With the Iraqi’s at the tip of the spear and American support, the terrorists will likely be driven from Iraq or they will join the 15,000 that have already died there.
I just don’t see Kerry with Bush’s resolve. Should he be elected he will likely face both a Republican Senate and House. Those majorities are likely to increase in 2006 (the party in power typically loses seats in the off-year elections). Kerry will also have the problem that over half his party is against the war and are for an early “Exit Strategy.” I see no good coming from that.
Although jobs and health care are important, I feel that survival overrides everything. The Islamic Fascists would like to give us two choice – convert or die. I find neither very attractive and so I vote to fight.

STRANGE HEADLINES!
“MONSTER IN LOCH NESS EATS BOAT FULL OF TOURISTS!”
“BIGFOOT ADOPTS CONJOINED TWINS!”
“INCREDIBLE GECKO-BOY IS ON THE LOOSE AGAIN!”
“BUSH AND KERRY IN DEAD HEAT!”
There are some headlines that are beyond belief.
Now, before I get into this, I myself am a lifelong Republican. My grandfather used to hoist a few with Nixon and bitch about “them damned Kennedy boys”.
The claim that polls show voters split evenly between Bush and Kerry defies all logic and reason. More to the point, such a claim is insulting to voters.
Setting all other issues aside, the cold hard fact of the matter is that the Bush administration lied about Iraq to justify a war of conquest. I know there are some hard-core Bush supporters still living in denial and refusing to admit they were made fools of, but with the issuance of the Duelfer Report, it is now the OFFICIAL US GOVERNMENT POSITION THAT Iraq did NOT have weapons of mass destruction or the means to make them. Iraq had indeed complied fully with the United Nations requirement to disarm. Other government reports confirm that Saddam Hussein was NOT supporting Al Qaeda, nor was any link between Iraq and 9-11 ever documented.
The President lied.
There was no "Intelligence failure". An Intelligence Failure is when something is happening that you don't know about. You miss the evidence. Or you misinterpret the evidence you have.
But with regards to the claims about Iraq's weapons of mass destruction, there was no evidence to miss or misinterpret. There could not be, since in hindsight there were no weapons to leave traces of evidence with. The story about weapons of mass destruction was just made up, and fraudulently manufactured "proof" created to support that lie. The mere existence of Tony Blair's dossier, plagiarized from a student thesis, is proof not only that the claims of Iraq WMDs were lies, but were known and conscious lies. Had there been any real proof, it would have been shared immediately between the various war-mongers. There would have been no need for Tony Blair to concoct his discredited Dossier. But, what the public were offered were mislabeled and blurry photos, made up dossiers, and balloon inflators misidentified as mobile biological weapons laboratories (which the British government knew about since they had sold the balloon inflators to Iraq in the first place).
So, there was no "intelligence failure". There was no intelligence with which to fail. The whole crock about Iraqi WMDs was a made-up fiction. Deal with it.
Personally, I can think of no greater crime a leader can commit than to lie to his people while sending their children off to a war of conquest. An administration capable of lying to start a war is capable of any evil.
And that’s why media claims that half of voters will vote for Bush are unbelievable, and insulting.
Because that headline is claiming that at least half of voters are perfectly okay with a President that lies to start a war.
That headline claims that at least half of voters are okay with sending other people’s kids off to die in a war based on lies, in exchange for a tax break and cheap gas.
That headline claims that at least half of voters are okay with the epidemic of severe birth defects that has hit the families of our service people exposed to depleted uranium in Iraq.
That headline claims that at least half of voters are okay with a United States that has become one of the most hated nations on Earth.
That headline claims that at least half of voters are okay with a United States that tortured innocent civilians in the hunt for Iraq's weapons of mass destruction that the government now sheepishly admits never existed.
I've never met anyone like that.
I don't know anyone who says, "Yes, it is okay for the President to lie to us all to start a war nobody wants, and we don't need to know his real reasons."
I don't know anyone who says, "Yes, it is okay for your kid to be killed and crippled in Iraq as long as I get a tax cut."
I don't know anyone who says, "Yes, it is okay for our government to torture people."
The people I know are appalled by torture, mourn the war dead, are concerned at America's loss of moral leadership in the world, and do NOT give their consent to be ruled by a government that lies to them to start wars.
And that is why I don't believe the headline that voters are split evenly between Bush and Kerry. It is just too fantastic.
Of course, political analysts will admit that public polls don't measure public opinion, they are intended to manufacture it, hoping that if the illusion is created that most people want to rub blue mud into their navels that most people will just go along and the blue mud manufacturer will grow rich (and then make the appropriate political contributions).
And that is the real reason for the polls claiming that Bush and Kerry are in a dead heat; to create the illusion that the race is even in advance of yet another litigious and dishonest election. Already the news is reporting scandal after scandal of rigged voting machines, destroyed voter registration cards, and other vote frauds. In one case reported last week, voters in an early voting state were receiving hoax phone calls inviting them to vote by using the buttons on their touch-tone phones. Needless to say, after completing the phone call, these voters will be staying home on November 2nd.
For vote fraud to work, it must appear that the candidate engaging in fraud could have won anyway. If candidate "X" is down twenty points in the polls then wins the election, taxpayers will be suspicious. Stealing an election requires polling numbers that make it look like the fraud is winning anyway. And that, in the end, is the real reason that despite Kerry's post-debate lead, the media polls have slowly edged their way back to claiming that the race is even.
Would this President use his influence to rig the media polls? Of course. This is, after all, a President who lied to the people to send our kids off to a war of conquest.
Say, did you read that headline of how space aliens in UFOs are going to bring Elvis back?

Islamic Fascism? Give me a break. Saddam was a secular ruler, a particularly nasty one, butIraq sure wasn't the center of any terrorist organizations. Saddam saw to that, rather brutally. It was the heavy handed US intervention that set loose the can of worms, and killing 15000 "terrorists", lots of which were 5 or 6 at the time, didn't make too many friends. Now we face the classic Vietnam dilemma, we can win any battle, but not the hearts of the people. Fortunately, King George is on his way out, and with it, hopefully, the Christo-Fascist philosophy that he lives and breathes in. Kerry, hopefully, realizes what a clash of fundamentalisms is, and will not continue to escalate the process. We have a perfect model right in front of us with the Israeli/ Palestine conflict. And like their fiasco, it isn't going to improve until you address the roots of the conflict, which is Justice for affected members, forging dialog and mutual agreements between sides, and doing whatever it takes to get both sides to lay down their arms.

I notice you state "hopefully" when you describe Kerry. I hear that a lot. People "hope" Kerry is better. They're not conficent, they just hope.
Peace in Israel can only come in one of two ways, either the Israelis leave and find residence in some other part of the world or the Palestinians are so utterly defeated that give up their Intafada. Peace happens when one side is victorious.
Hey Ted, and those who agree with you on the "Islamic Fascists" thing - LISTEN UP!
Fascism is defined by Cambridge dictionary as "a political system based on a very powerful leader, state control and extreme pride in country and race, and in which political opposition is not allowed."
You are right that many Islamic countries have a fascist structure, but have you been looking at the direction in which your own country has been moving (and quickly) since 9/11? First there was the Patriot Act, signed into law 45 days after 9/11. The US Government couldn't put out a fire in 45 days, let alone pass such a massive piece of legislation (300+ pages). Then there was the whole 'enemy combatant' thing, where people were arbitrarily rounded up and put into camps in Guantanamo Bay and Abu Ghraib, where they were raped, tortured, and plenty were killed. How many were charged or found to be 'Al Qaeda?' You tell me. Not near 50%, for sure. Doctors were killed. Teenage girls were raped and murdered. I could go on for a while.
And if this is a war against Islamic fascism (!!), as you say, then why did we attack a SECULAR nation like Iraq? Indeed, the Ba'athists were very modern in comparison to just about every other Arab state. Burqas were not mandatory for women in Iraq, for example, but they are in Saudi Arabia, Iran, Syria, Afghanistan, to name a few.
"Extreme pride in country" is the part that sticks out of the fascism definition for me. People are comparing flag sizes, singing 'God Bless America' aloud at ballgames, and giving people with brown skin and straight black hair evil looks (and worse), and why? Because their leader, a liar and thief, told them so. Why did he tell them so? Because his bosses told him so.
As Mussolini put it, "Fascism should more appropriately be called
Corporatism because it is a merger of state and corporate power." What is closer to this blueprint, Iran or the USA? Syria or Israel?
And when was the last time a Muslim told you to convert or die?

First of all, it's Intifada, not Intafada. And what a Stone Age response that is! Perhaps we should stop giving Israel millions of dollars per day to shoot children and bulldoze people's houses. Maybe the Arabs aren't as stupid as we think they are; maybe they have noticed the fact that we (the US and Israel, one in the same) call anyone throwing a rock a 'terrorist' and summarily execute them, possibly raping and torturing them first, while at the same time running them down with tanks in the name of 'freedom.' Freedom for whom?
Man, Ted, it's sad. People, like you, who can spell and write, who can form complete sentences and everything, honestly believe that George Bush, the man who inherited a record surplus and turned it into a record deficit in 4 years, is actually the best man for the job! That people like John Ashcroft should judge right and wrong! That criminals like Dick Cheney are acting in the interests of the American people!
Man, get out of your Expedition, or Suburban, and join the rest of the world!
Posted by: Non-Moron at October 26, 2004 04:42 PMI did not say a Muslim told me to convert or die. I said that's the choice bin Laden, when he was still alive, and those that rode with him wanted to give us. Those that are still live are still bent on that goal.
Iraq was invaded because Saddam had abrogated the cease fire agreement that ended the first Gulf War, his WMD was unaccounted for and he refused to show what happened to it. By contrast, Kadafi and led us to all his WMD and said, “Here. Take it.”
Saddam was our enemy and bin Laden was our enemy. An old Arab saying goes, “The enemy of my enemy is my friend.” A wait and see approach risked terrorists getting some very nasty stuff. Had that happened and al Qaeda attacked with Iraqi WMD, the President could have been properly impeached.
It was a damned if you do and a damned if you don’t decision. The President made a decision. 50 years from now, we MIGHT be able to decide if it was a good decision. One never knows for sure because each decision is an experiment of one.

Posted by: Davethetemp at October 26, 2004 11:09 PMTed, Iraq was invaded because Bush wasn't willing to let the UN weapons inspectors do their work (which leads one to believe he knew nothing would be found). Every single inspector, including our own, could find no WMD's, even before the war. Do you remember that?
Why did a Bush official appear on a television political show falsly stating that the administration "knew" where the WMD's were, i.e., around Baghdad, Tikrit, and to the North, South, East, and West. Do you remember that?
Iraq had "no-fly" zones imposed on the northern and southern portions of the country -- places where Saddam had no influence. The United States and Britain bombed these no-fly zones continually, increasing to daily, in the run-up to the invasion of Iraq. Zarqawi, our current boogeyman, supposedly had a training camp in Iraq, but it was in the northern no-fly zone that the Bush administration did nothing about. Do you remember that?
Do you remeber Colin Powell appearing in front of the United Nations making accusations with no actual proof, just a little container, some drawings, and his now-undone reputation?
Since your memory regarding the events leading to the invasion of Iraq is so faulty, is it any wonder that people look askance at your analysis?

Bush runs his campaign on the premise of "being strong on national security," while being the exact opposite.
Bush can't or won't find bin laden, the main guy who attacked us. Bush can't find the anthrax mailer. Bush can't find the WMDs. Bush can't find the 600,000 net jobs he has lost.
Out here in Idaho, among us arch-conservatives, we simply say that Bush, "screwed the pooch," and is trying to sell the pups.
The clear choice for republicans like me and every other american is John Kerry for President, I don't think its possible anyone can do worse than GWB.
Ted,
It's actually, "Elements of Style" by Strunk and White, not "Stunk and White". Precision can be as important as brevity.
Kerry in a landslide. You heard it here first.
Posted by: Jazzbo at October 27, 2004 01:24 AMHaving grown up in a religious cult, GWB reminds of that semi-literate leader I experienced - the one who also used religion as a smokescreen to deceive, misinform, and manipulate to get support for all his bankrupt policies. The wolf in sheeps clothing that devours just to satisfy it's own appetite. (a lazy need for significance, but not on their own merit)
GWB demonstrates my former cult leaders simplemindedness, the claims to be in such harmony with God, that he owns the absolute truth and therefore doesn't need to go through a process of listening, studying, discerning, considering, debating, and learning before making such serious decisions. GWB demonstrates my former leaders superficial charm; his isolating the good from the evil; the patholotical lying; the demonizing of criticism; the guarding of the dishonesty and secrets so no one can easily corroborate or expose the noxious failure and injustice going on there; the poor behavioral controls; the plans made with grandiose and fantasy thinking regardless of the actual circumstances; ruling with mundane cultural rules and fear; hoaxing the followers to believe he's the hero and savior of everyone's after-life safety; the cut and paste spun information that is unanswerable to any human authority. (Geneva Convention? or code words like Clear Skies, No Child Left Behind, Healthy Forests to disquise his true intensions that would never otherwise be accepted?)
Yes, GWB and Bin Laden are very much alike. Both hear the voice of God; Both use fear to manipulate and divide the world between good and evil camps and then judge who is worthy to be in and the unworthy are out; Both also set out on a fantasy mission to purify the world into their own twisted ideological view. GWB through his God appointed superpower, OBL through his God appointed Al Qaeda. Since they both worship a God that is sadistic and brutal, they both are driven by a paranoia to strike pre-emptively. They both have unleashed untold levels of violence and carnage to achieve their misguided purpose and then told all the innocent victims, their suffering is for their own good. After they both brought God into their conflicts, the positions of both became absolutely sacred and impossible to negotiate; They both have developed war fever and the actions of both have put the world into peril. They both justify their own evil to themselves by tricking others into thinking they are good with selective words and almighty claims. Power corrupts and both these men have given a good example of how mixing power with religion glorifies the corruption and suffering.
However, it's the power that their followers have misguidedly invested and anchored in. It's the woven fantasy that can shimmer brighter than reality and be immensely seductive -which then floats the leader, like cream, to the top. These leaders like GWB can be so spell binding, they can even get their followers to dismiss all the obvious absurdities, but especially even get them to surrender any principles so they can then comfortably put their self serving interests above all else - even the suffering in their own backyards. These addicted followers, who typically make the Wall Street Journal their Bible and the stock market their worshiped idol will even prop up the lies so to feel safe, which keeps them preoccupied with themselves while they constantly assess their self worth by their stocks, blue chips, portfolio's ... all legitimized by God. That's why GWB makes me feel exactly like I'm back experiencing that despicable Cult again.

How about if Saddam had nukes, then they were looted? It is the same with the explosives that were not guarded, the yellowcake that was not guarded, the machinery that was needed to make enriched uranium, that was not guarded. This isn't just incompetence, this is willful dereliction of duty, and an impeachable offense. I say indict the lot of them, then let them give their excuses but this time provide evidence. Can't do it, then welcome to GITMO.
This outfit is really all about their own personal power, and holding on to it. The worst that could happen to them is to marginalize them and then fix the problem. Enumerating the problems takes too long we need to move forward and put this fiasco behind us. After prosecution of course.

Posted by: admin at October 27, 2004 02:37 PMA quote from freeper Ted:
"A wait and see approach risked terrorists getting some very nasty stuff."
For all you know they already had very nasty stuff. The WMD excuse to raid oil rich Iraq was a ruse. I am a chemist. I know that any synthesis chemist worth his salt can make chemical weapons with a few thousand dollars investment. It is also easy to make bio-weapons if you have cultures of pathogens. These are available from any country with medical microbiology labs. All it takes is an operator on the inside to steal them. We have already been attacked with bioweapons. We have yet to bring anyone to trial for the attack. Come to think of it, has the Bush administration brought anybody to trial for terrorism outside of GITMO kangaroo court?
The most difficult WMD to make is a nuke. Prior to our invasion everybody knew that Saddam was no where near making a nuke. The most he could have done was provide non-fissible materials for a dirty bomb, but a number of other sources exist for this material besides Iraq. The former Soviet Union is loaded with these materials in old seed irradiators and nuke batteries for weather stations. They are not guarded. The Bush administration is taking advantage of the scientific and political ignorance of the American people.
