(October) Surprise! We're not making this up. Here's the bulletin:

DUBAI (Reuters) - Arab satellite television Al Jazeera said on Friday it would broadcast a video tape from al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden addressing the American people.
It said the tape, to be aired at 4 p.m. EDT, would discuss the reasons behind the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States and their repercussions. It gave no further details.
He's probably tricking the cable networks, and he's just going to give his standard stump speech.
UPDATE: Yup, he's baaaaaaaaaaack. Looks like he's gained a few pounds since we last saw him. We wonder if he was waiting for the markets to close at 4 p.m.
UPDATE: Actually, the Dow shot up about 30 points the instant that the Osama tape was announced, so apparently terror is good for the economy. Also, the wingnuts over on the far-right Web site, Free Republic, are saying things like: "This is terrific news for the President." Disgusting.
So, this is supposed to be happening in 10 minutes? Have American networks said they're going to air it?

I have a hard time getting worked up about it because it just seems like more of the same, and will obviously just engender more of the same from the Bush Administration - a big ol' nothin'.
And it was interesting to see that OBL's obviously seen Fahrenheit 9/11 - I liked the reference to "My Pet Goat."

I keep hearing the Bush campaign saying Kerry will turn the war on terrorism into a law enforcement and intelligence gathering operation. I don't understand why that is a bad thing.
The idea that we took the fight to the terrorists by attacking Iraq is ridiculious. We just gave them more opportunities to take the fight to us. We won't beat these guys by launching a massive occupation and hoping they will throw themselves at the occupation forces. We will beat them by getting people on the inside to tell us where they are. We can't attack an invisible enemy.
Posted by: FormerRepig at October 29, 2004 08:13 PMWatching this on the evening news (Tom Brokow and the local folks before that in New York) we were astonished that every news person seemed to think this was a big deal and that it might totally change the campaign for president. Ruth is exactly right--nothing new here. Of course, Bush and/or Kerry might try to make something new out of it. Can't see why this would help Bush in any way--we all knew Osama is still alive and that we have not got him, although many of us Democrats considered the possibility that the administration had him and was waiting for the best time to reveal it.

I mean, i'm voting for Bush and i can't see how this tape is good news for him, unless you take the argument that if a video is the best Osama can do, and that he'd probably much rather have another 9-11 type attack, then he must be pretty weak.
But even so, going on the assumption that most people feel he should be dead or captured by now, it still doesn't look good for Bush.
That being said, for every nitwit on the right saying that this is great news for the President, you can go to similar sites on the left and find people claiming the tape is a GOP/Rove plant.
The point being, it's easy to find nutty extremists saying stupid things on both sides.

The Middle East Media Research Institute says the correct translation of Bin Laden’s speech was frangled by the MSM. They claim Bin Laden says, “Every state will be determining its own security, and will be responsible for its choice, it means that any U.S. state that will choose to vote for the white thug Bush as president has chosen to fight us, and we will consider it our enemy, and any state that will vote against Bush has chosen to make peace with us, and we will not characterize it as an enemy.”
I think he is taking a softer line than in previous tapes. He seems to be offering both the carrot and the stick. Any US state that votes for Bush is Bin Laden’s enemy. Any US state that votes for Kerry is not. Bin Laden is offering us peace in our time.
I will conclude (perhaps wrongly again) that Bin Laden’s organization has been hurt.
UBL on tape and Saddam sitting in jail??? Shouldn't it be the other way around?

It`s a shame that a person kills over 3000 americans and we go after someone who had nothing to do with it.
Having worked with cows in my younger days, I will tell you that cows are pretty stupid. Maybe not down to the turkey level, but none are sharp tacks. And they are carefully tracked. Those with very good numbers are worth some nice change.
Bin Laden, though evil, is not stupid. Although I do think he misunderestimated our reaction to 9/11. Smart evil people can be very difficult to beat. Saddam was overconfident and not up to Bin Laden's level. He fell more easily.
From what I read, the U.S. military has a small force very actively pursuing UBL. A big force would be ineffective as those nations we are searching in can ignore a dozen SF guys, but not a full division.
