Our friend Suburban Guerrilla called to our attention some interesting language on the Web site of www.laptoplobbyist.com, the wingnuts who cost local WHYY radio reporter Rachel Buchman her job over an angry and ill-advised voice mail.
The group's "Privacy Statement" states: LaptopLobbyist.com cares about protecting the privacy of our visitors and subscribers. When you send an Insta-Fax or take other active (sic) at LaptopLobbyist.com we will keep you informed about our activities and projects. In such cases our e-mail will contain a link to a web site. It will be your choice as to whether you decide to visit that site or not. We will never give your email address or other information about you to someone else.
Who knew that the policy doesn't apply to voicemails?!
In fact, check out what's posted on the site today:
We have received tons of requests for the voicemail we received from Rachel Buchman. Therefore, we are linking to an MP3 file of the voicemail that has stirred this literal hornet's nest of controversy. Please note: Ms. Buchman leaves a call back number in the voicemail which went to her office at WHYY. We have left the number intact to validate that she did, indeed, place this call from work. However, please do not call this number as Ms. Buchman is no longer employed by WHYY.
Irony, thy name is Lapto Plobbyist.
How does the number one leaves on a voice mail indicate the location from where the call was placed?
You'd need caller ID for that.
Still, this reported did a stupid, irrational thing.
If you let them get your goat, they win. Take that energy and do something productive. Write a letter, join an advocacy group, start a blog, something. But nothing good can come from a berating phone call.

I felt pretty good about it and nobody cared or gave it a second thought. Now I waste plenty of time and publish my stupid and irrational thoughts where at least 4 or 5 people see them on a biweekly basis - What on earth was I thinking?
Having made a good number of 'ill advised' phone calls in my life, I have some empathy for the reporter, even if her words were a wee bit over the top. The violation of the stated privacy policy is priceless though.
