Bush Impeachment Countdown -- 569 days to go

Today is January 16, 2005. There are 569 days until the estimated impeachment and removal of George W. Bush (for how this was calculated, read after the jump.) This is another in a daily series chronicling the high crimes and misdemeanors of the Bush administration.

Today's high crime: Imperalism run amok, in violation of international law. From Reuters:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States has been conducting secret reconnaissance missions inside Iran to help identify potential nuclear, chemical and missile targets, The New Yorker magazine reported Sunday.

The article, by award-winning reporter Seymour Hersh, said the secret missions have been going on at least since last summer with the goal of identifying target information for three dozen or more suspected sites.

Hersh quotes one government consultant with close ties to the Pentagon as saying, "The civilians in the Pentagon want to go into Iran and destroy as much of the military infrastructure as possible."

One former high-level intelligence official told The New Yorker, "This is a war against terrorism, and Iraq is just one campaign. The Bush administration is looking at this as a huge war zone. Next, we're going to have the Iranian campaign."

How the countdown is calculated: Bush's expected removal is based on the date that Richard Nixon was forced from office: Aug. 8, 1974, the 565th day of his second term. It is only an estimate -- Bush could in fact be removed from office earlier than Aug. 8, 2006.

It is my hope that we REALLY ARE doing recon in Iran.

Of course, this could just be a purposeful leak to let Iran THINK we're doing recon on them. Just to drive the mullah's a little crazier than they already are.

One would think that with the mess produced in Iraq (I find myself expecting polling places to be bombed and voters shot on election day) the Bush administration would have learned not to invade another large country that has powerful anti-US factions scattered throughout, but then I would have thought they could have foreseen the situation in Iraq. I could see what would happen (and wrote my Sentators on this subject to no avail) and all the information I had came from newspapers, magazines, and television. So maybe they will invade another country. My despair deepens.

I too expect much bloodshed on Iraq's election day - but what can we logically conclude from that? That some people in Iraq don't want elections? Should we let the anti-democratic forces succeed?
