We meant to address this issue yesterday, but we got busy -- not in a Burger King bathroom, but writing for the newspaper and consuming mass quantities of alcohol and Buffalo wings...the things a journalist would normally do on a GOP inauguration day.
But we'll ask today: What in the name of 'a just God" was Trent Lott doing up there in front of the world, as master of ceremonies for Bush's inauguration. This is the one day that America really needs to show its best face -- not its "blackface."
OK, a lot has happened in the last two years, but in case you've forgotten, Lott was ousted from his job as Senate Majority Leader in December 2002 after he said at the since-deceased Strom Thurmond's 100th birthday bash that if Thurmond had been elected president when he was running as a rabid segregationist in 1948, "we wouldn't have had all these problems over all these years."
That proved to be the tip of the iceberg. Others, led by blogger Josh Marshall, unearthed Lott's interview with a racist rag called Southern Partisan and his involvement with the segregationist Council of Conservative Citizens. The solution that made sense at the time was to oust him as majority leader. even though his sins were not deemed of the level that he should or would resign his Senate seat. Why? Because sensible people didn't want somebody with a background like Lott's in such a visible role as the No. 1 Senate leader.
And yet, here is Lott -- out of 295 million Americans -- whose face is on every TV network from Fox News to al-Jazeera, introducing Bush for the "fresh start" of his second term. Wasn't the idea to keep him hidden in the attic, at least for a while?
Bush's best line of the day was when he said "our country must abandon all the habits of racism, because we cannot carry the message of freedom and the baggage of bigotry at the same time." And yet he allowed himself to be introduced by a 5-piece Samsonite set of bigotry. Talk about undercutting one's message.
If only if the rest of the country had followed our lead in Pennsylvania and voted for Gore and Kerry, we wouldn't have had all these problems over all these years.
Good points. I'm glad we don't have any racists in the Democratic party.

Now I see of 32,000 questionable votes in Milwaukee in a state Bush lost by less than 12,000 votes. Hmmm.

1) Byrd should be held accountable for his past but there is little evidence of his active support of bigoted organizations in last 20 years
a) Lott has been notably active even in the last five years. Any fair assessment would see a BIG difference.
2) Clean, honest, open elections need to be the bedrock of America. Ohio, Pa, Florida, New Mexico and any close state should get full complete investigations.
a) The news consortium that investigated Florida 2000 found that Gore would have won under any standard that included a recount of the whole state. Bush would have won only under the recount that was limited to a few counties but even that was stopped by the Supreme Court.
b) Nightline had Cokie Roberts noting the cloud of suspicion over Kennedy's 1960 win because counties in the Chicago area had unrealistic turnouts of 89%.
c) But Nightline failed to note that Ohio 2004 had Repub counties with turnouts over 95% and that there was a statewide pattern of Repub counties having turnouts 5 to 10% above the state average. d) Democratic counties in Ohio 2004 had turnouts consistently 5 to 10% below state averages even though it was those counties that reported the long waiting lines.
e) And what was Watergate about but Nixon and the Republicans using dirty tricks, including break-ins and wiretaps and then purgery, to slant a Presidential election.
