Bush Impeachment Countdown -- 564 days to go

Today is January 21, 2005. There are 564 days until the estimated impeachment and removal of George W. Bush (for how this was calculated, read after the jump.) This is another in a daily series chronicling the high crimes and misdemeanors of the Bush administration.

Today's high crime: Excess and unlawful secrecy. From CBS News:

The FBI is fighting in court to limit how hard it has to search for government documents requested by the public under the Freedom of Information Act, one of the main laws for ensuring openness in government.

If the bureau prevails, people could have a diminished chance of getting documents from the nation's most famous law enforcement agency, open records experts said.

In court, the FBI is defending a recent automated search that missed some documents that had been released years ago in a separate FOIA case.

How the countdown is calculated: Bush's expected removal is based on the date that Richard Nixon was forced from office: Aug. 8, 1974, the 565th day of his second term. It is only an estimate -- Bush could in fact be removed from office earlier than Aug. 8, 2006.

Of course since they can't get their computer system to work, it is not really all at easy for the FBI to comply. But they should just admit that they don't know what they are doing instead of fighting against the law. I grew up on FBI propaganda ("The FBI in Peace and War" for example--a popular radio show), so it was not until the persecution of Martin Luther King did I begin to see that there was a problem there. More recently, the detective novels I read tend to have incompent FBI agents as working against the hero. I think these works of fiction actually reflect the true situation, which is often the case with fiction. Sometimes it seems as if one can learn more from good fiction than from, say, bad television.
