A bizarre news story out of Washington State has us wondering how far the feds are going in probing the pro-Iraq war neocons and their ties to the Israeli lobby back in D.C. -- and whether some DOD/CIA types are frantically trying to cover their tracks.
Yesterday, a small paper out that way, the Everett Daily-Herald, carried a blockbuster of a story. It reported that a team of five federal agents -- three from the CIA, and one each from the Department of Defense and the the U.S. Department of Engery -- showed up at the University of Washington to search through the archival papers of the late Washington Sen. Henry M. "Scoop" Jackson. (We were alerted to the story off this posting on Daily Kos.)
"Scoop" Jackson was a Democratic "Cold Warrior" in Hubert H. Humphrey mode who twice ran unsuccessfully for president and who was a major player in American foreign policy during the 1960s and 1970s. He died in 1983 -- or more than two decades ago.
The federal team apparently found what it was looking for, after culling through some 1,200 boxes of Jackson's papers over several days. A library official (who's probably in a heap o' trouble right now for spilling the beans) said that 10 documents were removed and classified as top secret.
The paper doesn't know what the feds were looking for, and neither do we. Given the make-up of the team, including a DOE official, it's always possible there was concern about information related to nuclear weapons (the Hanford nuclear site is in Jackson's home state) getting in the hands of terrorists.
OR, this could be connected to the hottest under-the-radar story inside the Beltway right now, an FBI probe over whether insiders were passing policy secrets regarding Iran to the D.C.-based American Israel Public Affairs Committee, or AIPAC. A Pentagon official named Larry Franklin has been targeted in the probe, but many suspect the investigation goes much deeper into the neo-con movement. Franklin worked for another Pentagon neo-con, Douglas Feith, who was the No. 3 official in the Defense Department but surprised many by abruptly quitting "to spend more time with his family."
Where does "Scoop" Jackson come in? Feith's mentor was former Pentagon official and influential conservative policy advisor Richard Perle. And from 1969 to 1980 Perle was a member of Jackson's staff and at times his most influential advisor, dubbed by some "the Prince of Darkness" during that era. Perle is so close to the Jackson legacy that he remains a member of the Henry M. Jackson Foundation that the senator established.
Paul Wolfowitz, the No. 2 Pentagon official considered the architect of the pre-Iraq War strategy, wasn't on Jackson's payroll but was a longtime friend and informal advisor. And another neo-con -- Elliott Abrams, special assistant to the president focusing on Middle East affairs -- reportedly worked as special counsel to Jackson. (This story from the Seattle Times is an excellent overview of how Jackson's staff birthed the neo-con movement.)
So what's really happening here? Obviously, the search wasn't part of the official AIPAC probe, since no FBI agents were reportedly present. Could it have been a counter-probe operation, given the DOD involvement and the fact that the CIA has become a lot more friendly to the Bush administration since pal Porter Goss took over?
The only thing that's certain is that it's not every day that five federal agents essentially conduct a raid the papers of an elected official who's been dead for more than 21 years. Kudos to the Daily-Herald for breaking this story, but now it will take smarter minds than them (or me) to dope this out. Paging Laura Rozen and Josh Marshall!
Looks bad to me. If they were just conducting a usual law-enforcement investigation, why would they have classified documents as top secret? And it's difficult to believe that documents that old and part of a senator's regular files could have any significant national security implications three decades or more later. The only conclusion I can draw (if it is correct that documents were classified) is that someone wants to hide something embarrasing from the public and that our fine government is giving them an assist.

Scoop Jackson pratically created the modern anti-China faction and all his cohorts are dead set on a confrontation -- soon. The Bush administration is sealing up tons of old records as classified or top secret. Whole sections of the Nixon administration papers at the National Archives are no off limits. Why?

Perle, Wolfowitz, Feith, and Abrams to a few sessions and see if it uncovers anything of use...Let's fuck a few of 'em up!

He was always in favor of war, in favor of more spending on armaments, and of course, "the Senator from Boeing". I was not aware of his connections to the neo-cons who have steered the Bush foreign policy.

What is the probablility that stashed away in some scholar's filing cabinet is a photocopy of these newly classified documents?

Anyone know if the response time or the number of troll posts per thread is some sort of clue to how badly the "cleaning crew" wants to see any particular story remain under-reported and unknown?
Have I somehow overlooked a group of American citizens who actually want to see our Constitution destroyed, so that the rights to free speech and free assembly, as well as the rule of law and access to the courts are abolished? (Not counting the FBI/CIA/NSA/ATF/Police/etc, of course)
