ASK THE TRAINER: PEAR-SHAPED EXERCISE?

Heather: I have a question and would appreciate any help you can give me. I am 45 years old. I try to walk at least 3-4 days a week for approximately 40 minutes. I try to do a "Pilates for Dummies" 35-minute tape a couple times a week. I also try to do a couple exercises on the "Total Gym" I have at home. I also like to eat... - I know my problem is most likely portions, but I do try to eat good.

My question is - most of my weight is in my hips and butt - call me a pear. Is there a specific exercise I can do to help me? I am about 5'4" and weigh about 135-140.

I was this finally toned thing in my 20s then kind of stopped working out totally in my 30s (I guess because I got married and comfortable). Now I really want to get back into shape - I also enjoy the bit of work out I do because it does make me feel good. Any suggestions would truly be appreciated.

Thanks. Linda

Linda,

Unfortuantely it is impossible to "spot reduce" in your aforementioned areas of concern. However, I do suggest turning up the intensity of the strength training component of your workout regimen. The more lean muscle mass you have the more calories you will burn at rest. Secondly, I would advise an analysis of your diet. Take three days and write down everything you consume on a regualr basis. Either email me for review or consult a nutritionist for suggestions on how to best modify your food intake. The combination of these two elements are your best bet for changing your body rather than focusing on spot reduction. Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Recently I began training with a personal trainer and for 5 months, 3 times a week everything was lovely. Unfortunately, due to personal obligations beyond my control I haven't worked out in two months. The strange thing is I have enough equipment in my basement to continue on my own but I just don't have the motivation. Also, I was working on my abs during my stint at training but the results weren't forthcoming. Could this be because of fibroids located in certain areas of your abdomen? Help.

Deatria, It sounds to me like you would be best served resuming the sessions with your personal trainer if at all possible. You alluded to the fact that you have difficulty with motivation and while you have the equipment your compliance to exercise is of utmost importance. As far as your difficulty with defining your abdominals I would advise resuming your strength training and cardiovascular training as well as modifying your diet. For those who desire to see their "six pack," the goal is to reduce body fat to expose the abdominal muscles. Everyone has abs, it is just a matter of uncovering them. With regard to your fibroids, I do not believe that they would limit creating a lean abdominal appearance as long as they were not so significant as to limit your strength training or were contributing to a cosmetic abnormality.

Hi,
I'm 19 years of age. I am 5'4 and weight about 135-138. I can't seem to lose the extra ten pounds i want. I work out 3-5 times a day at least an hour each session. I have tried diet after diet, but nothing seems to work. I go to college so the food selection is limited. Is there any simple diet or routine i can do. I would like to lose the wieght in 3 weeks (but i'm sure thats not possible!) thanks

I need help! I have been going to the gym 3 times p/w for over a year now and have only lost 5kg. I would appreciate any tips you could give me to loose weight. I am 26yrs, 163cm, 76kg, BMI = 28.4 .I have cereal most mornings for brekkie, fruit at work if I forget, Lunch I usually have tuna in pita bread, snacks - nuts, fruit Dinner is curry or steak and Vegies (no potatoes). I feel like snacking at night after work when I can finally relax. I want to lose 10 kg. I work hard at the gym I feel like it's worthless I find it really hard. I try to eat really healthy all day but then sometimes ruin it by snacking bit of chocolate/ gelati at night. after dinner. I am a pear shape I have toned up but my weight just always stays the same. I would appreciate any tips you could give me to loose weight.
