Working out on the road, in the cold

APRIL: So this weekend, I didn't run at all. At all. I went up to my mother's house in Northern New Jersey and not only didn't I have access to a gym, but I wimped out to running outdoors when I opened the door to 30-something degree weather each morning. OK. So this can't happen every time I travel this holiday season, or I'll be missing great weekend workouts - and eating a ton of holiday food to boot. So how do you guys make sure you work out when you're on the road either for work or to visit familly or friends?

THERESA: I take my orange elastic resistance band when I travel __ it's good for lunges, leg lifts, side step exercises and arm work; you can do these exercises in anybody's guest room where you might be staying. You can also buy something called Aquabells-- free weights that you can easily pack in a suitcase and inflate with water. I haven't tried these, but I've read good reviews of them. If you're traveling to another city where you'll be staying in a hotel, be sure to book a place with an on-site gym. If you'll be staying with relatives, do a little research online ahead of time to see if there's a YMCA in the area or a nearby gym where you can buy a day pass. If you're up for winter jogging or walking, scope out where you might want to run ahead of time; Reebok has a Web site that lists info and maps of running trails in many U.S. cities. When I'm visiting friends or family, I usually try to get my exercise first thing in the morning, before everyone else is up, but sometimes it's fun to talk the folks you're visiting into going to a gym with you, even if they're not regular exercisers.

And if you're only going away for a couple of days, it's OK to skip the workouts, of course. Get in a good session before you leave home, and don't let yourself feel guilty!

LAURIE: A great thing about yoga is that you can do it wherever you are, as long as there's some floor space. I have a book that outlines a series of moves. I have copied the pages and keep them in my travel bag so I can do them when I want. Gets the travel kinks out, too.

I've read, though haven't tried this, that jumping rope is a really good exercise. Certainly something you could pack in a suitcase.

THERESA: Another good reason to pack workout clothes when you travel for the holidays is that exercise is such a great de-stresser. There are plenty of ways to blow off pent-up anxiety during big family get-togethers--- One is to knock back a few too many drinks and then tell your parents, siblings or your in-laws what you really think of them. But if you're hoping to wind up with any holiday gifts at all this year, it's way better when you feel stormclouds of dark, passive-aggressive energy welling up inside you, to take some time to be all by yourself while the turkey's roasting, and sweat off some calories for an hour or so.

And April, to get over your reluctance to get outside to exercise during winter, buy yourself an early holiday gift--- indulge in some sleek, warm exercise outerwear. I really like the form-fitting exercise pants and jackets you can find at Lady Foot Locker and other shops right now (or do your shopping at the runners' expo at Memorial Hall this weekend. )

JENICE: My advice is to not beat yourself up when you don't work out. Just do the best you can. And don't be too hard on yourself. If you miss one weekend, there's always another one coming up!

My parents live in North Jersey, too. When I visit, I often go as a guest to their gym. Most gyms have a guesting policy. My parents, both in their 70s, workout with a trainer, and occasionally I take one of their series of trainer sessions.
