Workout Music

ELLEN: I would love to know what music people listen to while exercising. I need to give Santa my list of CDs. Any motivating music out there? Or are there some good exercise CDs that have 20 minutes that’s good for aerobics and then 20 minutes for stretching? I do strength training so if there is a CD that matches the rhythms of that exercise, I’d love to know that.

LAURIE: Bring on the disco, baby! That driving beat keeps me going, and if I can sing along, I figure I'm getting some additional aerobics work. '70s-era Philly Sound stuff also does the trick. And Seal's first album is good (remember it from Cindy Crawford's video?).

THERESA: Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run" is a great workout song. OK, maybe that's a little cliche. I also like to listen to the Dixie Chicks, and I like old stuff like the Police that used to be staples back in my aerobics classes in the '80s. ("Every Breath You Take" is a good cool-down number) Health magazine has an article this month on where to order premixed workout music --- they suggest Motion Music, Dynamix Music and Power Music.

OK, everyone else out there--- please let us know your favorite workout songs!

(And for those just finding this page, please remember to check out today's thread as well!)

Comments

I agree with Laurie on the disco/funk stuff. I recommend getting someone to burn you a CD including:
-"Fighter," Christina Aguilera
-"I'm Every Woman," Chaka or Whitney.
-"Soak Up The Sun," Sheryl Crow
-"Family Affair," Mary J.
-"MotownPhilly," Boys II Men
-"Stand," REM
-"Breathe," Faith Hill, to cool down
Too much good rap to list -- Run-DMC, LL, Will Smith

Besides my own internal motivating factors, the type of music I listen to helps to pump me up for a workout. I really enjoy burning my own CD's for different types of workouts. For example if I am doing something cardiovascular intensive I prefer music with a higher tempo or beat so I can move at a faster pace. If I am strength training beat doesn't really matter but the intensity of the music does.

Posted by: Heather on December 2, 2003 03:35 PM

I think its important to match the pace of the music with your workout first. It's also a good idea to listen to something that will motivate you. On my iPod, I have a workout section featuring a bunch of different songs. The techno versions of "Total Eclipse of the Heart" and "Ray of Light." I also like extended versions of songs by The Chemical Brothers--the beat is steady and it is easy to zone out while keeping my pace fast. Trance music is good as well.

Posted by: Amy on December 2, 2003 04:16 PM

Let's go with The Milkshake Song! Anything I can dance to makes me inspired to work harder. . . not only is the pace a better match with my cardio workout - but it makes me want to push myself for those sexy outfits to wear out on the weekend!

Posted by: meg on December 2, 2003 04:31 PM

Reggae seems to set my groove, and makes me think about shaking it in my Bikini in the hot sun.

Posted by: lynn on January 1, 2004 05:35 PM

I would have to say that "Eye of the Tiger" is always a good choice. Everytime I hear it, I think of Rocky and how hard he worked out to become a Champion. Which brings me right to my next selection, We are the Champions - Queen.

Posted by: Tammara on January 27, 2004 09:07 AM

I am just starting to work out on a regular basis. I walk 2 miles a day to start. I am a cancer survivor so Gloria Gaynor I will survive is always in my head!

Posted by: Sue on January 27, 2004 05:04 PM

I find that "The Final Countdown" is always a good motivating song.

Posted by: Paula on January 31, 2004 12:24 PM

I would like to add that these songs are great to work out to!: Red Hot Chili Peppers- Higher Ground, and of course, House of Pain- Jump Around.

Posted by: Holland on February 10, 2004 09:35 PM

Right now Got to have Maps by Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Seven Nation Army by White Stripes. Just got in to the gym and just hearing these songs to me I want to go and work out.

Posted by: Michelle H on February 11, 2004 11:12 AM

Eye of the Tiger! It is a classic pump (not plump)you up song!

Posted by: Alexis on February 25, 2004 03:31 PM

stronger (britney spears)
burn baby burn (tramps)
girl i wanna make you sweat (ub40)
running (no doubt)
beat it (micheal jackson)
physical (olivia newton john)
and of course the rocky soundtrack - nothing could get you more pumped then that!

Posted by: kaitlin on March 4, 2004 03:40 PM

This is going to sound weird, but has anyone listened to the ending credits to Moulin Rouge? Well i was randomly listening to that song one day and fell in love with it! So i took it running with me one day. IT IS PERFECT for keeping you running. It starts out alittle slow but it is absolutely perfect! It's about 7 minutes long and if i listen to it twice in a row I'm done with 2 miles already. I know its only one song but its definitely a good find and i suggest everyone go find it. O it doesnt have any words either. All instrumental. But its perfect. Trust me. its called "Bolero" by Simon Standage. DL it if you can.

Posted by: Liz on March 9, 2004 10:42 PM

"Yeah" by Usher ft. Ludacris & Lil' Jon
"I Believe In A Thing Called Loved" by the Darkness
"This Love" by Maroon 5 <awesome!!

I like Janet Jackson...there's many of her songs that get you moving.

Posted by: Marisa on March 21, 2004 08:08 PM

Some good ones are:

"The Boogie That Be" - Black Eyed Peas
"Bounce" - Sarah Conner

and try searching for techno remixes, they're great for pumping you up!

Posted by: Bria on March 23, 2004 12:37 PM

eminem "sing for the moment"

Posted by: Alex on March 23, 2004 09:12 PM

My favorite song for working out is by far "holding out for a hero" by Bonnie Tyler from the Footloose soundtrack. It's beat is amazing for a good run or intense cardio work out. Plus the song itself is just very empowering. I like the cool down at the end also. Being almost 6 minutes long it's great for power burts. I like to challenge myself by putting forth my best effort for the entire length.

Posted by: Renee on March 24, 2004 04:18 AM

K.C. And The Sunshine Band. Live In Concert.. I Love Boogieman, Get Down Tonight & That's The Way (Uh-Hunh-Uh-Huhn) I Like It (Uh-Huhn-Uh-Huhn)

Posted by: Khandi on March 24, 2004 12:02 PM

I haven't seen it yet, but "Pour Some Sugar On Me" by Def Leppord is a definite favorite. It's such a cheesy song, but an up tempo, and definitely gets you going, as do:

"Hemmorhage In My Hands"- Fuel
"Awake"- Godsmack
"I'm a Slave For You"- Britney Spears
"Fighter" and "Dirty" by Christena Aguilera
And, of course, "Eye of the Tiger"

Posted by: Mari on March 25, 2004 11:31 AM

Let's Get Loud, by JLo is great!

Posted by: Jana on March 27, 2004 01:11 PM

anything by eve 6 or blink 182, but "open road song" by eve 6 is perfect to keep you sprinting your final lap. also, "here i go again on my own" by white snake is great just to get psyched for a workout.

Posted by: mirjam on May 4, 2004 10:17 AM

I can't believe some of the songs I work out to have not been mentioned! These are especially good if you are a thirty-something 80's baby, like me:

Mony Mony (Billy Idol) *great for warming up*
She Bop (Cyndi Lauper)
I Hear You Knocking (Dave Edmunds)
Smoke On The Water (Deep Purple)
Rock 'N' Roll Part 2 (Gary Glitter) *if you've been to a ball game, you know this one!*
Back In Time (Huey Lewis and the News) *great for warm-ups or cool-downs, as the beat is strong but it isn't overly fast*
I Want A New Drug (Huey Lewis again)
I'm All Right (Kenny Loggins) *you hear this, you'll be dancin' like that gopher...*
Jungle Love (Morris Day and the Time)
1999, Kiss, Let's Go Crazy (Prince)
I'll Be There For You (Rembrandts)
Ballroom Blitz (Sweet)
Tush (ZZ Top) *just a reminder*

And some more recent stuff:

Not Coming In (Stuart Hill) *this is the song played on the "Ed, Edd, and Eddy" cartoon short, but good luck finding it!*
I'll Be There For You (Rembrandts)
Smooth (Santana)
Hell (Squirrel Nut Zippers)
All Things (Widelife) *of course, the theme from QE*
Battle Without Honor or Humanity (Tomoyasu Hotei) *this is featured in "Kill Bill", it is used as O-Ren and her posse walk that hallway*
That Certain Female (Charlie Feathers) *again from KB, this is the song the sheriff is listening to on the radio*

If I can think of any more, I'll post them.

Of course, I have weird taste. :)

Posted by: lady k on May 8, 2004 04:33 AM

I have listened to a lot of the songs listened and Iget bored easy when I listen to songs over and over and I know what to expect. but some I find always get me going are Fire by Joe Budden and Never Again by nickel back

Posted by: Gen on May 8, 2004 09:57 AM

Another couple that I thought of:

Hard To Handle (Black Crowes)
I'm Blue (The 5,6,7,8's) *again from the "Kill Bill" soundtrack, it's the song they are playing during the long shot when the Bride is walking to the ladies room...and I dare you, after hearing this, to NOT go around humming "I'm blue-ue-ue do-be-do-be-do-be-do"*
Stuck In The Middle With You (Stealers Wheel *good for walking, warmups, or cooldowns, due to the slightly slower but still cool beat*
Rainbow In The Dark (Ronnie James Dio)
Living In America (James Brown)

Posted by: lady k on May 9, 2004 04:14 PM

I was wrong...(I hate to be wrong!)

"The 5,6,7,8's" song "I'm Blue" is being played after O-Ren and her little posse have walked up the stairs into their private room, and when The Bride is hanging from the ceiling while Gogo looks for her. "Woo-Hoo" is the song being played during the long, ladies room shot.

Sorry...duh-me. :) Either way, they are both great workout songs!

-Got the life (Korn)
-Midlife Crisis (Faith No More)

If you like latin beats, these songs by the Gypsy Kings are good....

-Baile me

-"I know there's something going on" (Frida)
-"Invincible" (Pat Benatar)
-"Edge of Seventeen" (Stevie Nicks/Fleetwood Mac)
-"Total Eclipse of the Heart" (Bonnie Tyler)

For Techno..
-"Eternity" (Datura)
-"Love Shines Through (Chakra)
-"Sandstorm" (Darude)
-"Absolutely Fabulous" (Pet Shop Boys)

This site is fantastic..... but I see you get a lot of that. I scrolled through and I saw a lot of great stuff, however I didn't see any Joan Jett. The old stuff (I Love Rock and Roll) or the new stuff ( I wanna be your Dog)
I also have a lot of:
Beastie boys (old stuff like Girls)
Black Eyed Peas - they are great.
Basement Jaxx (Album Rooty)
Missy Elliott
Ludacris
Keep the suggestions coming - always updating to new stuff....

I love all of these songs! Something that I have not seen posted is any music from United State of Electronica...this is absolutely the best workout CD...and what's cool is that the whole CD is like that, not just a couple of songs. If you haven't heard of them, check out their website and listen to a couple of tunes:
www.usemusic.com
You won't be let down!!

Posted by: Kristin on July 1, 2004 05:56 PM

Wow, some of these songs are great! And the White Town Song, "Your Woman" is so funny! I don't know why I find it amusing but I nearly shot my drink out of my nose when I saw it, because I was laughing so hard. I totally forgot it exsisted.

Here's my favs though...

I looooove Aerosmith to workout to, they're just awesome and have such great music...(Love in an Elevator is good)

I also like Kylie Minouge, all very upbeat, girly songs.

Hole- Celebrity Skin
Styx- Renagade (happy tune)
Britney Spears- Boys (Co-Ed version)
50 Cent- In Da Club
Whitesnake- Here I go again (starts off slow)
Van Halen - Jump
U2- Discoteque
Twista- Overnight Celebrity
St. Lunatics/Nelly - Midwest Swing
Pink Feat. Redman- Get the party started (sweet dreams remix)
Orb - Little Fluffy Clouds (great beat!)
No Doubt- You Can do It
Mystikal- Shake ya ass!
Limp Bizkit- Rollin' (Urban Assault Remix) This gets me PUMPED up!
Lasgo - Pray

Gosh, I know there are so many more... and if I didn't need to be awake in 3 hours I would list the rest :)

and thanks for all the good ones!!

I love working out to techno type songs. They're usually very long and have awesome beats that keep you working out longer. Here are some suggestions if you like running:
Funky Beats-Chemical Brothers
Satisfaction- Benny Benassi
Also, I LOVE running to Harder to Breathe- Maroon 5. I find the tempo to be perfect.

If you're just warming up or starting your workout, Low Rider by (sorry I'm not sure who) is a fun cute song that'll get you going for a bit.
Or you could try,
Papa Loves Mambo- Nat King Cole (It puts you in a happy mood)and it's peppy and upbeat

I find that Toxic-Britney Spears also helps keep you running at a good pace, although I also find that if I play it too much I get sick of it fast.

Another song some of you might like is, I Like That by Chingy. It's the one they've been playing on those McDonalds commercials, when the kids cross the street and it turns into piano keys.

If anyone has any other techno songs they like to workout to please post them up!

I looked all over the internet for lists of workout music and then I found this site! What a great idea and such good suggestions from everyone! Thanks so much!

(I'm just getting started, so I haven't figured out what works for me. Hopefully I'll be able to post after I've been working out for awhile!)

The song "Peace Train (Holy Roller)" by Dolly Parton (I know...not what you'd think right?) is wonderful to work out to. It's got a kick butt beat and it's long. Just think of your feet hitting the pavement/treadmill with every beat.
Others are:
Mondo 77- Looper
For my people- Missy Elliot
Same old song- sev
I want you to want me- 10 things I hate about you soundtrack
But my new favorite is the Dolly Parton song.
This site is great! Thanks!

I keep coming back to this list for new inspiration for my workouts! Thanks for sharing. Here are some of my favorites I haven't seen on here (forgive me if they're repeats):

If You Want Me to Stay - Sly and the Family Stone
Connected - Stereo MC's
Yahoo! - Erasure
Mysterious Ways - U2
You Sexy Thing - Hot Chocolate
Hella Good - No Doubt
All I Really Want - Alanis Morrisette
Sadeness (Part 2) - Enigma
Sour Times - Portishead
Bouncing Around the Room - Phish
Paranoid Android - Radiohead

The last few seem like odd choices for workout songs, but they have the perfect tempo for my run. Oh, and the entire Run Lola Run soundtrack may be the best running CD ever.

Didn't see this on the list... The Seed 2.0 by The Roots. Awesome song!!

Found this thread and thought this might be a good place to get an expert opinion: what do you think of the Repacer product ? (at http://www.optimistec.com )
I'm very interested to receive comments or suggestions.

I am wanting to make a CD for my girlfriends for christmas. I've had a really rough year and they have all been so supportive. My idea is to use basically girl power songs, but I am not a music person so I need some help with this. Basically I am looking for songs that empower women who make them realize how great and strong we are. Two i have thought of is RESPECT and Survivor from Destiney's child. I think I need about 12 more. Suggestions please:)......
