HEATHER: While running is an excellent way to do cardiovascular training it is certainly not the only method to achieve a high level of fitness. Virtually any activity that elevates your heart rate to your target heart rate and is maintained over 20-30 minutes can be considered cardio training.
Activities such as hiking, biking, rollerblading, dancing and swimming all benefit your cardiovascular system. Don't forget group fitness classes such as spinning, step aerobics, and kickboxing are all great ways to get that heart rate up as well. Be creative and mix your workouts up to avoid boredom.
Remember to challenge yourself each workout as your body will ultimately adapt to the stimulus you choose.

The cool thing about swimming is that while you are doing it you don't realize how much you're exerting yourself because you're not sweating like in other aerobic activities. After just a few weeks of swimming I feel more sinewy. Even if you are not a swimmer or an OK swimmer, you can still get in 4 or 5 feet of water and have a good 30-minute workout in the pool. Ice skating is a fun aerobic option this time of year. The Blue Cross RiverRink is celebrating its 10th anniversary season at Penns Landing. The rink is open Monday through Thursday, 6 to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday, 12:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. and Sunday 12:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Cost is $5 Monday through Thursday, $6 Friday through Sunday. I enjoy things like ice skating, but can't do it regularly enough.
