THERESA: How obsessive are you about checking your weight? It's my first move every morning, before I do anything else, before coffee or breakfast, before I shower (so my hair's not wet, you know!) Some women I know don't bother with checking the bathroom scales at all. I'm not unhappy with what I weigh right now, and I'm not trying to lose weight, but I don't want to gain either. So I like to keep daily tabs on this-- if I'm a little over where I want to be on a given morning, I'm more likely to be disciplined about diet and exercise that day. What's everyone else's thinking?
LAURIE: I agree with you 100 percent. I check my weight every day, and adjust my day's diet/exercise accordingly. Some say this strategy can be self-defeating, but I have found just the opposite. If I don't check, the pounds sneak on. A friend of mine weighs herself daily, and if she's over a desired weight, she'll cut bread out of her diet, or fats for a few days.
ELLEN: I used to be very interested in my weight. Then again I used to believe in horoscopes. Now my weight can swing five pounds either way. So when it's up, I'm sad. When it's down, I tend to reward myself unduly by eating badly. So I just skip the scales. I rely on how my clothes fit to corral me in if I am overindulging. I do get weighed every time I'm at the doctor so I do have some semiannual check. We also have a medical scale at work near the Medical Department's office. So if I'm feeling really thin, I'll go weigh myself there. It is time-consuming because it takes about 10 minutes to take off and then put back on all my jewelry, jackets, shoes, socks and glasses after I weigh in.
THERESA: I didn't know we had a scale at work! Shall I start weighing myself before lunchtime too?
OK, time for everyone else to --ahem-- weigh in!
I think it's a great idea. I used to do it daily, but I stopped after reading that it wasn't the best measure of improvement. The truth is that I kept my weight in check when I monitored it on the scale daily. Whenever I exceeded the weight I wanted, I cut back on soda, carbs, until I lost the weight again.
Posted by: Yvette on December 18, 2003 10:03 AMI check my weight about once a week. If I checked it more often I would drive myself nuts, because my weight fluctuates during the day and especially from morning to night. I can gain five pounds in a day by bedtime. I find the best overall way to maintain my weight is to check once a week or one every couple of weeks to be sure I'm maintaining.
Yes, I agree. Weighing yourself everyday would drive me nuts too. I check once a week. I am satisfied with my weight, but I would like to lose 5 more pounds , but it takes 1-2 pounds per week. PLus there are days you will retain water.
Posted by: Mindy on January 15, 2004 08:14 AMThey say when you are trying to lose weight, do not check your weight more than once a week. If you are constantly checking your weight, you are losing site of what you want to do. Such as, losing a certain set amount; not freaking out because you may have gained a pound here or there.
