THERESA: The sale of the dietary supplement ephedra, popular for weight loss and bodybuilding, is banned as of today. Does anyone have any experience using this stuff, and if so, any reaction to this ban?
JILL: I never used it, but I do remember taking a diet supplement some years ago that was recommended by a friend. I got dizzy and woozy and stopped and remember feeling like a total idiot for ingesting an unknown, untested substance. It's tragic how many of us fall victim to these miracle drugs that turn out to be dangerous and sometimes fatal.
LAURIE: I tried it once some years ago. My appetite went down and I did lose weight, even taking it at half the recommended dose. Felt weird and jittery at first but then OK. After all the publicity about dangers, I wouldn't take it again and think a ban is probably a good idea -- if it really is as bad as they say. Unfortunately, it's sometimes hard to tell if the FDA is acting because of science or public pressure. Wouldn't it be nice if they banned cigarettes, an unequivically proven killer?
APRIL:
I once did a supplement program from GNC and I have to tell you some of the vitamins were totally benign, but others were heart accelerators and I ended up stopping the program. It was one of those two-week weight loss kits. I think nothing really subs for exercise.
LAURIE: Yeah, April, I agree. Because of course any weight I lost taking supplements I gained back later because I hadn't changed my eating or exercise habits.
I've never tried anything like that, but my husband tells me that at his gym he is constantly shocked at the number of men who think it's perfectly OK to use supplements, even the questionable ones. I think that despite all the attention that's been paid to this, it's still really, really common.
Posted by: Wendy on April 13, 2004 10:55 AMI was desperate and took an over the counter diet pill once that contained ephedra. It was okay at first, but after the second day, I was jittery and dizzy. It was like having an anxiety attack. It was horrible. I stopped taking it right away. It just wasn't worth it.
Posted by: Theresa Mary on April 13, 2004 12:17 PMI have taken ephedra before. I started taking it to drop weight quickly and I did have a noticeable difference in energy, and found it easier to workout longer. However, it made me incredibly irritable around the clock, like having the worst case of PMS ever and multiplying it by ten... Really bad. I ended up stopping taking it because even losing weight wasn't worth being that miserable.
Posted by: Amy on April 13, 2004 01:14 PMI still use it.
I find it helps to increase my intensity in the gym as well as control my weight. It's helped a lot with the weight actually.
I discussed this with a doctor who agreed that with the epidemic of obesity, this supplement could have helped considerably as long as care was given in its dispensation. Considering the FDA has been chastized twice by the GAO for having little to no evidence with respect to ephedra, it's surprising that a ban should have been put into effect.
Even more interesting are the results of the tests that have been run and can be seen in the New England Journal of Medicine that show a dramatic decrease in weight. They showed no ill side-effects and concluded that obese people who are otherwise healthy, should be able to use ephedra safely.
I've used it consistently (in cycles, as the efficacy wanes after about 8 weeks) for the past 12 years. And I assure anyone, the results of my last physical, and I quote, "could be framed and put on display". This included an EKG as well as blood work.
Not me, but my daughter used it and ended up in the emergency room. After taking it , then going to the gym for a workout, she felt dizzy and light-headed. After arriving at the hospital, numbness in her arms and her face set in. The nurse said the side affects brought on an anxiety attack. It was horrible. Now she does the exercise without the drugs.
Posted by: R.C. on April 13, 2004 08:11 PMI took metabolife for over two years. I had to stop bc I became pregnant last year. I am so sorry to hear about the ban. I had success with the supplement and I saved a bottle for after I quit BF my son. It sucks. I did not have any side effects. It is too bad that the governemnt has the right to take something that is really harmless off the market. I choose to believe that the people who died from the supplement did not die from the supplement but rather had heart problems or whatnot and just took the supplement w/o being checked out by a doc. I was and I am healthy and my doc says I am in great physical condition....I am glad that I have my stash.
Posted by: Christy on April 17, 2004 11:43 PMi used to take stackers that has ephedrine in it and i lost 42 lbs, i stopped taking it and gained 10 back. now im taking it again because the summer is cominig and it works. i didn't know they banned ephedra, i just bought stackers this morning.
Posted by: gloria on April 23, 2004 10:16 AMI took metabolite without caffeine. The supplement helped me shed the 30 lbs I gained after quitting smoking. I felt the appetite suppression and increased concentration were the greatest benefits.
(wish I had some now)
I did not feel jittery.I also did not take the full dose every day.
I tried to really listen to my body.
I took it for quite some time and I also took it w/ caution and exercised and ate VERY healthy at the same tune. Unfortunately, I had to stop using it due to the ban. I did experience 1 bad side effect since I stopped using, my period was GONE. Can anyone shded some light?
Posted by: Mars on August 23, 2004 12:05 PMI find ephedra really helps with appetite surpression. If anyone really wants some, you can probably get a tincture of it at an herbal shop. Also, its still used as the active ingredient in some pills for asthma.
