McDonald's fights obesity!

THERESA: How weird is this? McDonalds is launching an anti-obesity campaign? Here's how McDonald's can promote fitness and health-- start by taking french fries off the menu. Take greasy fried-chicken out of the "garden" salads. Quit hawking soda. Hold the secret (high-fat) sauce.

I almost never eat fast food, and whenever I do (usually because one of my kids talks me into it) I feel bloated and guilty afterwards. And if you ever pop into a Chili's, or an Applebee's, or TGIFriday's or just about any other inexpensive chain restaurant, the food also tends to be heavy, cheese-soaked and heart-clogging.

Are there any popular restaurants or fast-food joints where you can get delicious, healthy food?

APRIL: I think some of the heathiest fast food is at Wendy's. Seriously. They have baked potatoes, salads with lite dressing and grilled chicken sandwiches.

JENICE: Lately, when I'm totally hard up for fast food I've been dashing into Starbucks for a salad or a sandwich. Yeah, it's expensive but it beats Mickey D's.

WENDY: Look, you gotta give it to Mickey D's -- some of us with small children find it impossible to avoid, what with the climbing gyms and all the birthday parties hosted there. So having some relatively healthy things on the menu are a godsend -- we can eat while the kids do! (Not that I am totally averse to a Chicken McNugget, but I am sure that too many would kill me.) I like their fruit and yogurt parfait a lot -- please, no one tell me if it has 35 grams of fat...

I recently went to a Ruby Tuesday's in State College that offered the option of mashed cauliflower and steamed broccoli in place of fries and cole slaw. The cauliflower was really good! I also like Wendy's for chili, plain baked potatoes, and their salads, but I wish they had some more light dressing alternatives. At least give McDonald's credit for offering salads and vowing to phase out Supersizing.

You're right-- it is good that McDonald's offers salads and yogurt and other healthy stuff. The company's included diet-friendly items on the menu before, but let's face it, those haven't been big hits with customers. Every mom who might be inclined to order a fat-free salad is most likely at McDonalds with her child (or two or three) who will not be talked out of ordering a high-calorie Happy Meal with fries and a sugary, caffeinated soda. McDonald's is reacting to the threat of litigation as more consumers (finally) begin to see a link between what they eat and health problems caused by obesity. The company's new approach will only be successful if consumer demand for healthy food goes up, and if that's the case, perhaps McDonald's menu will become even more healthy. For the time being, I think it's wisest to steer clear of fast-food restaurants and shop for great food at the grocery store, so quick, balanced, healthy, grease-free meals are readily available at home.

Being on Weight wathers, I find that Wendy's is indeed a healthy choice, when all is considered. I had a dinner of a large chili and a grilled chicken sandwich with no sauce on it. It was delish and I did not feel guilty afterwards. You think they could make a healthier frech fry, maybe a soy based fry.

Are you people crazy? Take French Fries off the menu? Because some greedy out of control people don't know when to stop groughing their body????
I never hear of anything so stupid.

Our family and children been enjoying McDonalds for over 30 years with no problem, now the rest of us that have some sense and control have to do without french fries because some greedy people want to blame being overweight, just plan fat on McDonald's???? What next?

I see people so big that they take up two or three seats on Septa and sit there like it is their OWN PRIVATE BUS, no one else need to sit.
Obesity is another word for LAZY, GREEDY, UNCARING and ignorant. I say learn some consideration for others, before you order another pound of fries, and double hamburger with a "DIET COKE" they love to add at the end of the order, think of fitting on someone else's sofa at 400 pounds, or sitting their fat behind in a little CHevy Cav that is only meant to carry about 3 people and the driver.
Inconsideration is too rampant today, excuses and blaming others is too much. Greedy people want the rest of us that are considerate to suffer.
I do get tired of hearing these lazy greedy people complain, now they want SSI for being greedy and the rest of us that show some love and control for others have to suffer. Get another planet or get with the program of controlling what you buy and eat in your lazy body instead of eating and lusting and blaming McDonalds.

On McDonalds;

You know not everyone is fat!

Some people can control themselves and enjoy some french fries now and then.

McDonalds offers choices. That is the American Way. Why can't you all just grow up and stop trying to control what everyone else eats?

Work at controlling yourself.

Mind your own business and leave the rest of us alone.

It is crazy that Mickey D's feels inclined to discontinue menu items because of possible litigation. I am not overweight but it is a struggle to remain this way...a constant struggle. It does make me angry to see a morbidly obese person in fast food restaurants gorging themselves...most times I have to save my food for later. Please realize, I am aware that their are relatively health conscience overweight individuals. Americans must realize the being overweight is the result of consuming calories in excess of what our bodies need. Policing fast food chains and stomach stapling is the lazy, cowardly way out. Besides if these morbidly obese people get monetary settlements what else are they going to do with the money but buy more food -- sorry had to go there.

I know I'm a little late with my comment, but no matter how many healthy changes McDonalds makes, they'll never get my business again. As soon as I found out they were using lard instead of vegetable oil for their frying, after they claimed using the latter, I stopped giving them my money. You see, my family doesn't eat any pork products and they weren't truthful.

In response to a post by "lettice" saying that "Mconald's won't get any more of her money because they lied about using lard, & that her (lettice) family don't eat port products."..Lettice, girlfriend listen, not only might McDonald's have lied, but your family is too, if they get hungry enough, and who can say what is up the road or what conditions, don't you for one minute think that in a crisis your FAMILY would starve rather than eat something cooked WITH LARD. Get real and stop being picky. The christian way, the Jesus way is to eat whatever is offered, giving thanks to God in Jesus name for the food to nourish your God given body. Reading the labels, what it is cooked in, and all that shames me when people are starving, in some countries where they can't even get clean water to drink, let alone bathe, where food is so scarce they don't even get a piece of meat...what the heck is going on with this "I don't eat that"? Given any situation you and your family might not be prepared for, and you would eat anything you can get. BE thankful and less complaining, focus on the starving and you will enjoy what God provided.
One day, you will be knowledgeable about religion and know that God's Kingdom is not about FOOD or what it is cooked in, but being kind, appreciative, thoughtful, and receptive to offerings. Eat girl, McDonald's got it going on!!

McDonalds should take the fattening greasy stuff off of the menu! Jean you say that people have been enjoying it "for 30 years with no problem?" Lots people who are not overweight have cholesterol levels through the roof( and you may very well be one of them,) because of their love for this "enjoyable" garbage marketed as food.

It is a constant battle for me to not gain weight due to genetics. I work my butt off. I stay away from McD's and any other fast food restaurant because this "enjoyable" food is killer. Get real. Yes, do nourish your god given body, but not with fat ridden, greasy, calorie rich food.
