Broad Street - The Day After

THERESA: Highlight of the Broad Street Run for me-- just after I hit Mile 9, when I was SICK of running, a young woman sidled up next to me and said, "Are you from the Girlfriends Locker Room? I love your website! It's so inspiring!" Boy, that gave me the boost I needed to get to the finish line! So thanks very much to the woman in the orange T-shirt who said hi (just before she bolted way ahead of me!)

All the Girlfriends who ran the race (April, Julie, Jenice, Yvonne W. and me) had a great time and felt strong throughout. And the guys on our team did great too, including Publisher Joe Natoli, running the race for the first time. For results, check out today's Daily News or the Official Broad Street Run site. And here are some photos from the race...

What Broad Street stories do you all have to share? And for everyone who ran-- how are you all feeling today? And if you e-mail race snapshots to me today we'll try to get a few of those posted online also! CLICK below for some of our pictures.

Last year my boyfriend did the Broad Street Run and I was at the finish line cheering him on and wishing that I was also running. This year my wish came through and I also ran and finished it. The course was great, perfect weather, and well organized. I definitely will do the run next year.

This was the fourth time I attempted the Broad Street Run. I usually finish so far behind that I see only a few runners scattered on Broad Street.
This year I actually kept up with the pack. I was at the end of the pack but at least I was there. For the first time I felt I was actually in the race.
I started using the power gel packs (chocolate with caffeine) at 3 1/2 miles. They gave me the extra boost I needed along with 3 months of advanced step classes I've been attending.
Along the route I actually passed other runners (I thought I was dreaming).
I saw the pack cross the finish line for the first time. The last time I ran the race there were about 80 runners behind me. This time there were almost 700 runners behind me.

I'm sore today, but I don't care.

The race was fun!

Kudos to Aileen Kain, who ran the race in memory of her friend, Kim Gregor. Remember Aileen's comments some months back on this site about her plans to run the race? She did it! And Bill Fleischman wrote about her in today's Daily News! Way to go!!! Check out her story at http://www.philly.com/mld/dailynews/sports/8576730.htm.

Highlight for me: Not collapsing after I thought I was at mile 8 and saw sign up ahead for mile 7...seriously though, I thought running in such energy with so many people, was amazing, it inspired and really moved me!

You Go Girl! Congratulations to all the girl friends that participated in the Broad Street Run! Persistence, Fortitude, and Determination - That's what it takes to run the Broad Street Run and the race of life.

Theresa,
I wanted to write to you and the Girlfriends and thank you for encouraging me to participate in this year's Broad Street Run. I wrote to you guys in January wondering if it was possible for a couch potato like me to participate. As you know I ran to honor the memory of my good friend Kim Gregor, a young wife and mother of three who died this December.

Her sister and my roomate from college Kelly, is also a cancer survivor. Kelly was diagnosed at age 27 with stage II thyroid cancer. She was luckier than Kim and has been cancer-free for 5 years. She is now raising two young children in addition to playing a larger role in the lives of her nieces and nephew that Kim left behind.

I had three goals for myself as I embarked on Broad Street, none of which I knew whether or not they were achievable before I started:

1) Raise more than $1,000
2) Finish
3) Not finish last

I'm pleased/amazed to report I was able to accomplish all three and learned a lot about myself in the process. Although, as today's Inquirer points out there is absolutely no shame in finishing last. I finished in the back of the pack nonetheless but I feel like I accomplished something with the help of many terrific friends, family and colleagues who sponored me in the race.

Kim and Kelly's brother, Rich Biborosch ran Broad Street as well and finished 237th overall with a final time of 1:04:51, fully an over an hour a head of me -- that's 6:29 minute miles! Rich and his mother and father (Kim and Kelly's parents) hung around and waited for me to finish with signs and posters cheering me on.

My whole family was there too. In fact, my legs were so sore at the Navy Yard that my brother Patrick sensing I needed a little help, hopped over the fence, threw his arm around me and ran me in.

I could NEVER have done it without the initial encouragement from you and the Girlfriends at the Daily News -- especially your advice on how to train for the race and regular updates as the race got closer. Today, I'm really, really sore, but I'm smiling.

Many, many thanks!

-- Aileen

Hi Theresa,

I just wanted to follow-up with you after the run on Sunday. I did it! I averaged a 12 minute mile, which I'm proud of, since I was training at a 13-14 minute mile. My friends all did 9-minute miles, which was great. They made me line up with them at the 9-minute mile start & I was worried that I would be trampled. Not the case. And yesterday, we had lunch at Bleu in Rittenhouse Square and then got massages at Toppers. Not a bad way to spend the day, I'd say.

Anyhow, Sunday was a great day & I left with a huge sense of accomplishment. I've also decided to run the Jefferson Hospital 1/2 marathon in September. I think I'm hooked!

All the best,

Rebecca

Congrats, girlfriends! I'm so proud of you. And after reading this, I'm going to take my dog out for a nice, long walk! :)

I attended the Broad St. run this year (04) in support of my younger brother who has become a "marathoner". He's done Boston and Washington, DC marathons so we are very proud of him. He has encouraged us to run the Broad St. Run in 2005. What suggestions do you have to prepare for a 10 mile run?
