So-so soda?

THERESA: Love soda? Hate the carbs and calories? Soon you can enjoy "lite" soda that doesn't have diet soda's aftertaste.

The Associated Press reports that "Coke and Pepsi, trying to put more fizz into their soda sales, are about to launch new brands that taste like their flagship drinks but contain half the sugar, carbs and calories. Coke's C2 and Pepsi's Edge are to hit the market nationally this summer." Pepsi says a 12-ounce can of Edge has 20 grams each of sugar and carbohydrates, and 70 calories, compared with regular's 41 grams each of sugar and carbohydrates, and 150 calories.

I rarely drink soda, diet or not. It just seems like fake food to me. I prefer pure water, iced tea, sparkling water (with big chunks of lemon or lime) or V8 juice. But Edge or C2, with half the empty calories of regular Coke or Pepsi, are, I guess, a better option than standard soda. (We are still talking empty calories, of course.) I wonder if these new products will be a hit with kids.

Are any of you addicted to soda? Would you be likely to try these new products?

JILL: I try to avoid soda for all kinds of reasons, one of them the carbonation that leaches the calcium from your bones, or so I'm told. I think water is a much better idea. I drink it only when eating other garbage food like pizza, hoagies, etc. that don't go with water.

THERESA: Apparently, drinking lots of soda can contribute to osteoporosis, Jill.

JILL: Not to mention tooth decay and obesity.

WENDY: Geez, more attempts to engineer our food when simply NOT DRINKING SODA would do! I used to love it, cut it out of my diet because it's not good for me, and I really don't miss it!

I don't drink soda, so this doesn't affect me. My son used to, but stopped because he thinks it's not healthy. (Now if he'd only feel that way about cigarettes!)
But I'm glad to hear food companies are beginning to address the health problems soda consumption causes. McDonald's ending the super-size campaign is another positive sign that the companies whose products form the disgusting but typical American diet are having a slight crisis of conscience.
I was in a diner in North Jersey recently, surrounded by elderly people eating this horrible but typical diner food. I wondered to myself, how can these people not be hugely obese - or dead - eating like this all the time? Then I realized that most of their lives were lived in an era when portions were smaller, fast food didn't exist and soda was a treat, not a major food group. I wonder if our generation, and more importantly, our children's will be so fit in their elder years?

I wouldn't try any of those sodas. What's the point? They're junk food. Why not grab a bottle of apple juice? It may be caloric, but at least you'll get some good nutrients into your body.

There is really no good reason to drink soda. It accelearates tooth decay and leaks calcium from our bones. After consuming a carbonated beverage much of the liquid goes almost directly into the blood stream. This tends to make the blood less alkaline. The body will react as quickly as possible using various methods to bring the blood back to it's ideal pH level. For example the body will take calcium from the bones or use other alkaline fluids in the body to neutralize the acid. Carbonated beverages are so acidic that it takes a great deal of alkaline fluids to neutralize the drink. So bone loss is a first obvious negative result of carbonated drinks. You might remember high school chemistry when the teacher took a tooth (calcium) and placed it in a carbonated drink. The next day it was gone. The acid in the soda dissolved the tooth. The same thing can happen within our bodies.

And Jenice, a lot of fruit juices are junk food. Some of them are little more than sugar water. The actual nutrition in fruit juices varies by kind, and among brands. Some apple juices, for instance, claim no vitamin or mineral content at all. A fresh, unprocessed apple contains 5 percent of vitamin C , 5 percent of potassium and 4 grams of fiber, plus pectin and enzymes which, researchers have recently discovered, strengthen the human immune system.

I drank soda for over twenty years, then last August I had some kidney problems. Before I was diagnosed, I drank a soda and literally felt it BURN my kidneys.

The phosphoric acid is just terrible for you. There are hundreds of other reasons to stop drinking soda (diet or not).
