THERESA: It's Bike to Work week in Philadelphia and around the country. Check out local activities planned. And we'd love to hear tips from women who regularly bike to work about what you wear, how you cool off before you start your workday, etc. I have a cool little Bike-to-Work Week water bottle I'd love to send to someone who comments about this issue today... If we get lots of comments, we'll have a drawing at the end of the day to see who gets this. And check out bike-to-work.com to take the Shimano Commuter Challenge for a chance to win a free bike!
What a great idea. We should have a Bike-to-Work Week every week. Biking is an excellent way to get in some cardio, recreation, and transportation. It is good for the environment too. When I lived in Europe and visited Amsterdam sooo many people rode their bikes for transpiration. I believe there were more bikes on the road than cars. We could certainly learn from their example.
Posted by: Kimberly Garrison on May 17, 2004 01:12 PMI bike to work once in a while - we try for once a week. I live in NM so the climate can be a bit challenging, so early spring and fall are best. My boyfriend and I usually bike to work together - almost 20 miles round trip! I find that my clipless pedals are really helpful on the hills, but I usually wear a cycle skirt (with the built in lycra shorts and SUPER important chamois padding), sports bra, short sleeve shirt, long sleeve shirt, fingerless padded gloves, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a HELMET. Not only does a round trip keep me from going to the gym, but I also save on gas.
Posted by: meg on May 17, 2004 06:17 PMI live in the city been riding to work for years, all you need is a helmet, bike and lock. To get on a bike demurely while wearing a skirt tilt the bike over so you don't have to lift your leg to get on it. When you wear platform shoes or sandals on your bike give yourself extra time as they affect how far you can extend your leg when you ride.
Posted by: cole on May 18, 2004 09:01 AMI biked today (Wednesday) to my job in Ivyland, Bucks County, and didn't know it was bike to work week! Wow! I'm taking SEPTA part of the way to avoid the hills, until I'm in better shape. Biking in the 'burbs feels like you are taking your life in your hands every mile, but I've seen more people biking (one every day or so) during rush hour. An easy improvemet, and probably more palatable to drivers, is SHOULDERS on once-rural now nearly urban roads.
Challenge of biking to work: rain last night with drizzle this morning left puddles all over the roads, and now I have an unfortunate-looking stripe up the back of my khakis. The obvious answer is to wear bike gear and change at work, but I don't feel comfortable walking past my co-workers in lycra. It's not the professional image I want to project.
