THERESA: People Magazine has a new special issue on the stands, "Your Diet," packed with a lot of interesting, inspiring information; how to stick to your diet when you travel, great snacks with less than 50 calories, amazing real-people testimonials and slimming beauty tips. Also, the magazine had four unsuccessful dieters record everything they ate for three days. A dietitian then diagnosed where they went wrong. Check it out! And they ran this cool list of 10 things to do instead of eat:
Have any good suggestions to add to the list? Post comments and you may win our book of the day: We'll do a drawing at the end of the day to give away "The South Beach Diet Good Fats Good Carbs Guide," by Arthur Agatston, a nice little reference guide.
WENDY: The bathing suit idea would work like a charm for me. Also, drink water!
Look in the mirror and keep looking until you can honestly honor the body you are in right now. Negative self talk will ONLY DELAY THE VERY RESULTS YOU ARE TRYING TO ACHIEVE. We are all blessed with a body that we should cherish by eating wholesome foods, getting the right kind of exercise and honoring who we are each day.
Posted by: Diane Catrambone on June 25, 2004 09:49 AM Interesting list. All of the suggestions were designed to make you feel good, except the put on a bathing suit and look in the mirror. Wonder why that was in there?
My list additions: bike ride, read a pile of magazines that have absolutely nothing to do with dieting or self-improvement, walk along the ocean or any available body of water, talk on the phone with a friend.
It's like parenting. There are times when you need to offer support; there are times when only tough love will do.
Posted by: Wendy on June 25, 2004 10:13 AMSecond that addition from April! Hate the bathing suit idea - would send me right to the frig!
But I do recite to myself the reasons why it would be better not eating something I shouldn't. Reasons like, it's late and it's bad for my digestion, or I'm trying to look good in some outfit, or whatever. The best reason, though is simple: It makes ME feel good to be thinner, so why not do that for myself?
I'd also add to the list, watch a movie, meditate (works for whatever's ailing ya!), or - and this is admittedly risky - have a small piece of very good chocolate. A taste is often enough for me to squelch an urge like that.
Why does looking at yourself in a bathing suit have to be a negative experience? I work hard to stay fit, and I gotta say, maybe I'm delusional, but I don't feel so bad when I see how I look in the mirror.
Posted by: Theresa on June 25, 2004 10:25 AMI can't say looking at myself in a bathing suit freaks me out, either. I don't think I look bad, and it reminds me of the beach, which always makes me happy. What I don't like about that suggestion is that it is a threatening/guilt-tripping technique to keep yourself from eating. My first response to that is always to eat more!
Posted by: Laurie on June 25, 2004 10:37 AMI don't think it's a big hang-up -- it's more factual than that. The only part of my body I would change at all is my thighs, and when I see them I think, Hmm, if I ate fewer carbs and got going with the strength training again, I'll bet I could make a difference here. I don't spiral into a panic attack or anything. Really, I think that's more honest than never taking a frank, supportive assessment of how I look.
Posted by: Wendy on June 25, 2004 10:46 AMYou think we can be frank about how we see ourselves? I don't know. I remember shopping with a good friend once, and trying on this skirt. How's my backside look, I asked her. Like your backside, she replied. I think it's hard for us to embrace our imperfections; instead we judge them by some unrealistic standard, even when we try not to.
I've read that spot improvements are virtually impossible to achieve with your body - but I may be wrong about that. I do know that I have a tummy, and even when I'm my skinniest, my tummy is still not flat because it just isn't.
Laurie, you are definitely right about spot improvements -- it doesn't work, sadly. Though I do think carbs are bad for my thighs.
Maybe you should just give up bathing suits! ;-)

Posted by: Kimberly Garrison on June 25, 2004 11:23 AMExercise! I feel when I exercise I don't want to eat bad stuff or too much. I guess its the hard work...I don't want to ruin it.
Posted by: Jacqueline on June 25, 2004 02:13 PMTake a walk around your neighborhood. I take my dogs with me and I try to take a different route every time to keep the scenery new and interesting. This time of year I admire people's gardens and get ideas for things I'll maybe plant next year.
