Get savvy about healthy eating

THERESA: Associated Press reports this week that most people don't really know enough about healthy eating. Most Americans believe they're eating right, yet they also believe they're overweight. According to Ruth Kava of the American Council of Science and Health, indicates "that despite a flood of nutrition advice, people may actually understand very little about healthy eating. She has no doubt people believe they are eating good diets, but said the reality probably is quite different, in part because many people confuse eating healthy foods with having an overall healthy diet."

We're inundated with so many conflicting reports about what's healthy and what's not and it's hard to keep a clear head about what really constitutes "healthy eating habits." That's why I think it's a good educational exercise to keep a food diary for at least a few weeks and keep careful track of calories and nutrients, protein and fat, etc. I know that when I've done that, it's helped me realize (and memorize) what's really in the foods I eat. That makes maintaining healthy habits a lot easier.

Your thoughts?

YVONNE: I think people should try to focus more on keeping the fried foods and foods loaded with trans fats to a minimum. If you like pasta or rice, eat it as much as you want. Just exercise if you're concerned about weight gain. I'm not a big rice fan so that's not my issue. I'm a big fan of burgers and fries. I have turkey burgers when I am out if that's available. But let's face it, fries are evil.

It's still amazing to me how hard people try to dodge the truth that Jane Fonda spoke so many years ago: Eat less, exercise more. They substitute all these complex "diet plans" when we all know what we really need. I wonder if it's some residual part of our prehistoric brains that just can't accept the idea of NOT eating as much as we can?

I think that's a great idea. I consume a certain amount of unhealthy calories everyday, but I try to keep it to a minimum.

Also, I have had many benign tumors removed. I think a great deal of the problem I have is diet related.

I've thought a lot about the fact that Kimberly has never had the flu. I get the flu twice a year. I am changing my diet slowly, but I'm definitely changing it.

A friend has constantly complained to me about the problems too much red meat can cause, so I have almost completely excluded red meat from my diet

I'd love to have the discipline to keep track of my calorie/food intake for a couple of weeks, but I am hopeless at such bookkeeping. I've tried to do this with money I've spent, too, and that doesn't work either. So, foodwise, I wind up not counting the "hidden" calories -- the food you eat standing up, the cookie you grab from someone's desk while you're walking by, the things you throw into your mouth without thinking while you're working, etc. -- and then wonder how in the world I continue to gain weight when I hardly eat anything! And if you look at my meals, I don't eat enough to justify what's on the scale.
Still I do think we have a pretty general idea of the food that should be eaten sparingly: red meat, fried foods, alcohol, sugar. That's what guides me, at least when I'm properly sitting at a table eating a meal. Otherwise, look out.

I kept a food diary for 5 months to track what I was eating, how it made me feel, and to be HONEST about what I was putting in my mouth. Like Jill says, it is easy to overlook those little things here and there - but those are the very things that count the most! I won't eat fried food because it makes me feel terrible, and isn't good for me either, but I am more than happy to eat a cookie here, some candy, a few crackers, and that could be 300+ calories! Little things can add up fast. A pound here, a pound there, can add up quickly too. My strategy for weight loss - to be honest with myself about what I AM eating.
