APRIL:
I would love to know how people exercise in this heat. Strictly in the gym? At night? Do you run in the dark? This has been a problem for me because I don't exercise at lunch anymore.
THERESA: Next summer I'm going to spend the money and join an air-conditioned gym. Maybe I could just get a short-term membership to get me through the hottest months. Our company gym is too hot, and I have no desire to run in the heat. I think it's OK in summer to cut back on the cardio and do more weight training. Cardio is what's hard for me when it's hot.
JILL: First thing in the morning before the heat really gets unbearable, or at the gym. Even better, swimming in somebody's pool.
YVONNE W: I exercise in the gym. However, on extremely hot days I find moderate exercise to be as effective as vigorous exercise.
WENDY: I know we all know this, but it bears repeating...water, water, water. My poor 5-year-old is so thirsty when she gets home from camp in this weather! And I know she's drinking while's she's there (I've checked). But you just need so much of it in the heat.
Working out in the extreme heat is not recommended whether in or outdoors. Make sure you stay hydrated and eat properly too. It you choose to do a tough work out outside be sure to do it early morning or late evening. Be sure to take advantage of the sun and get your Vitamin D. Spend a minimum amount of time in the sun (about 10-15 minutes) daily (more than that and you'll need sunscreen).

Posted by: Laurie on July 26, 2004 01:13 PMNow that I live in Miami, I know a thing or two about hot weather. The difference here is the humidity, which can be brutal. During the summer months you should limit your outdoor exercise time to early mornings and late evenings. This way you will avoid the time when the sun and the humidity are at their worst. Make sure you make an extra effort to drink water regularly during the day, not just when you are feeling thirsty. If you wait til then your body is already dehydrated. If you are going to go for a long run or bike ride during the summer months drink some gatorade before, during and after your workouts. It will help to replenish the electrolytes your body will lose during your exercise session.
