THERESA: As the government ponders how to revise nutritional guidelines, it seems a move is afoot to make room for dessert in a healthy diet. Makes sense to me. I think a balanced diet can certainly include a sweet treat each day, and that making room in one's daily diet for such a treat can help us avoid cravings and overeating. I have a good friend who loves to bake homemade desserts, and she serves them to her family after dinner every night. One slice of torte or maybe two elegant butter cookies for everyone at the end of the meal. I've never known her to buy a package of Oreos or Hostess Twinkies, and she's raised two kids, working fulltime outside the home. Baking is her favorite hobby. And everyone in her family is fit and slim. Moderation is the name of the game, eh?
JILL: If more diet plans were realistic, then maybe people would stick to them, so I think including a dessert is a great idea . You can only deny yourself so long before you have a meltdown and stuff yourself with your food drug of choice. Mine is chocolate. And I will eat chocolate no matter what diet I"m on. The trick is to eat just a little.

I heartily agree! Moderation is always the key. And it makes sense that homemade desserts, or at least those made with good ingredients, would not put weight on the way more processed foods made with trans fats or that corn syrup that's been shown to mess up your metabolism.
My only problem with that is I have one dessert, then I tend to want another...
I think dessert is just fine in moderation (and I actually mean moderation, not those crazy portions some places deal out). But I do think every calorie matters to some people. My husband is still trying to lose some remaining weight, and he just has to focus so closely on what he eats -- or else it doesn't go away.
I agree. Moderation is the name of the game. The problem is most of us don't know what moderation is. A daily treat of chocolate might be two Hershey kisses, not a daily Snickers bar.
