The women of the Olympics

THERESA: Let's hear it for all the women who performed so beautifully at this summer's Olympics in Athens.

Philadelphia's own Dawn Staley led the U.S. women's basketball team to a gold medal victory Saturday. (She also was flag bearer for the U.S. team leading American athletes into the stadium.) The U.S. Women's soccer team won gold. (And Mia Hamm was flag-bearer at closing ceremonies Sunday night) Which women inspired you the most during last week's Olympics?

YVONNE: Amen! Both women you named are my top inspirations. But , hello! - Women's softball. Undefeated.

YVONNE W: Actually, not a woman, but Allen Iverson inspired me the most. I admired Allen because even though other players dropped out Allen participated in the games and struggled thru injures and defeat.

LAURIE: It's hard to know where to begin, American women were so outstanding at the Games. Especially Dawn Staley, who put Iverson and all the so-called "Dream Teamers" to shame with not only her scoring but her leadership. Sorry, Yvonne, I wasn't impressed with A.I. Carly Patterson, the gymnast who came back from a poor performance to win gold and silver, was also amazing, as was the women's soccer team. Let's hope these stars get the attention they deserve back here and their sports do, too.

WENDY: I thought swimmer Natalie Coughlin was amazing -- because of her performance and her attitude, which was so sunshiney it was a spectacle to watch. Not to mention Jenny Thompson -- still a competitor after such a huge career.

And, feel free to disagree with me, but I will always be moved by the gritty performance of gymnasts, particularly Mohini Bhardwaj this year. She had to fight to get there, and when she did she was the coolest under pressure of the entire team. I know a lot of people dump on gymnastics, because the girls are so young, under pressure to stay thin and the elite training regimine is so intense. But, let's face it -- every elite individual athlete, be it a swimmer, skater or wrestler, starts young and works impossibly hard. And those girls -- who now must be 16 in the year they compete, so no more 12-year-olds -- are thin but are built; they can kick your ass. I truly feel it is a great thing to watch young women outperform our image for them.

My personal favorites are the women sprinters. There are no better example on earth of great legs and buns than the female sprinters. Ladies, if you want to know how to get great legs and buns, train like sprinters train. They don't jog, they RUN, as fast as they can then they take a brief rest and they do it over again. This is called interval training, you can do alsmost the same thing on any of the cardio equipment at the gym or your home. You can also bet that these women also do a great deal of strength training and not just with wimppy 5lb weights. Do movements like squats, lunges, deadlifts and plyometrics that really give shape to your legs and buns and you too can get that sprinter look.

Dawn Staley played on an all city team with my daughter Yasheene Currie. She was great then as she still is. Congrats Dawn to you and your team.Evelyn Currie-Barksdale

How come nobody has mentioned the Women's Beach Volleyball, dynamic duo of Misty May and Kerry Walsh. Together for just 2 years and they dominate the game to come home with the gold. They even beat their own American teammates. They were so exciting to watch. May beat an injury to come back, and Walsh had only been on the sand volleyball court for 2 years. I was addicted to the game, didn't miss one, too bad the tv coverage was horrendous all around during the entire Olympics

Girls I love the shot puters bodies. My ideal woman would have a six pack bigger than mine and arms and legs so strong that she can kick down my bedroom door. It helps if they have facial hair too.
