THERESA: The New York Times reports that high-fashion, high-heeled shoes are bad for a woman's health: "High heels can be bad for wearers for several reasons, said Dr. Tzvi Bar-David, a doctor of podiatric medicine at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York.
An elevated heel lifts the foot out of its natural position and shortens the Achilles' tendon. Such shoes also pitch the weight of the body forward disproportionately onto the ball of the foot, which in turn upsets the stabilizing mechanics of the foot.
'High heels have a narrow area of contact and they point the toes downward, which puts the foot in an internally rotated position and makes their wearer more prone to spraining an ankle,' Dr. Bar-David said."
Where do you stand when it comes to shoes, girlfriends? Are you a slave to fashion or do you prefer sensible, comfortable, healthy footwear?
YVONNE: I'd like to add another drawback to what I call "cute-girl shoes" : they irritate the skin on top of the feet. In the spring and summer, I love wearing cute-girl shoes as much as most women do. But I definitely never wear them two consecutive days. Only maybe one or two pair of such shoes stay comfortable for me all day long so I just can't wear them a lot.
DIANE: Most of the time I’m in sneakers or bare feet! It the nature of my business though, so I’m lucky. However... when I put on a pair of heels and show off my legs, I feel sooo sexy and great!!
YVONNE W: Well, I'm a shoe girl. However, I've heard all the arguments against high-heels. I like to dance in heels, however, I cannot go higher than 3 inches. My preference is 2 and a half inches. I don't wear heels unless I'm working or dancing. That seems to work for now. I am concerned about my posture and possible back problems later.
LAURIE: When I first started salsa dancing I would try to dance on high heels. Ironically, you can dance on heels of almost any height because you dance on the balls of your feet. But ... I made a local podiatrist very happy and somewhat richer. My very slight bunions got bigger. I developed a cyst on top of my foot. I walked in pain and numbness much of the time. I got orthotics but the problem with those, for women, is that they only fit some of your shoes. And then there was the back pain, because higher heels make you arch your back too much when you dance.
Now I dance in smaller heels, much more securely and with less pain.
However, this taught me to walk in higher heels so I do, occasionally, wear them. Fashion victim, I confess. And I have to add that for one fashion shoot a few years back we had a pair of Jimmy Choo's -- pink satin and black lace sandals. Sigh...! They were my size so I tried them on. Surprisingly, they were comfy.
APRIL: I have to say that since I am so short (5 feet) I have worn heels my whole life. Only recently since wearing a pair of three-inch heels regularly do I notice my feet are aching. I agree they do a number on your feet.
JENICE: Well, all I can say is that I'm really excited that the new trend for fall is flats. After seasons of tottering around in spike heels, heels are coming down. Let's hope this is one "fad" that sticks around a loooong time.
YVONNE: This coming from a woman blessed with some height. Cry me a river :)
WENDY:
Personally, I like a bit of a mix...comfy shoes sometimes, pretty -- but uncomfortable -- shoes other times. I think the biggest problems come when you wear them 24-7.
I'm a shoe lover but still remember the early days of feminist activism when women were admonished not to wear heels because you couldn't run from an attacker in them. Yikes! I must admit to being a victim of fashion and can be caught limping around in uncomfortable shoes that I had to have because they were so fabulous looking. But I'm very happy during weekend afternoons in sneaks and loafers and sometimes long to ditch all the accouterments of work and urban life, including jazzy shoes and makeup. As for Jimmy Choo's and Manalo Blahniks, I think people who spend that much money on a name shoe are true victims -- of hype. I'd like to think that I would never do so, even if I could afford it.
KIMBERLY: I prefer wearing my sneakers or sport flip flops. However, when I have to put on the Ritz, I must admit I wear a fashionable heel (no stilettos though).
THERESA: I hate ever wearing uncomfortable shoes. I do it very rarely. I have a couple pairs of heels that are tolerably comfortable, but I'd always rather wear flats. I hope Jenice is right about the popularity of heels waning.
Unfortunately, to look her most professional, a woman has to wear a suit and heels. Think about it, ladies. Do men ever put up with any physical discomfort for the sake of fashion? No way.
WENDY: The greatest thing about that whole metrosexual moment was seeing men discover brow waxing. Take THAT, boys!
LAURIE: And they do have to wear ties sometimes.
THERESA: Yeah, but a tie does not actually cause one iota of physical discomfort. Think of how men would cry after 30 minutes in heels.
I injured my ankle after running in shoes with improper support, so heels are a rare occasion for me. There are some heels that are better for your feet than others, but there are a lot of stylish flats and stuff too.

They took some getting used to, but now I wear them for dancing and social events. Not too hard on my feet. They also work as an unusual icebreaking gimmick to meet new women.
