OK, I know I may be a little slow when it comes to spotting trends, but I gotta rave about something today, even if everyone else in the world is way ahead of me on this. Have you all already discovered Trader Joe's? I visited the chain for the first time this weekend-- we went to the new store in Media. Forget everything you've ever believed about healthy food being expensive. I filled up my cart with lots of nutritious stuff and only spent $33. I bought spinach and nuts and granola and frozen salmon and whole-grain bread, hummus, marinara sauce and more, and was amazed at the low prices. Next weekend I'm really going to stock up!
JILL: The first time I went to a Trader Joe's in California, I was spellbound. I couldn't wait for the chain to come here and now that there's one in my neighborhood, I'm a constant visitor. I tried to go the first day but couldn't get in the door. What a blessing. It makes you realize how much you're being ripped off at other places. (And it's also provoked neighborhood grocery stores to lower their prices.)
I have never been to Trader Joe's, but now my curiosity has been piqued.

I am a Trader Joe's shopper. But I am also a cook, and I have to be honest, the per unit price versus retail price doesn't add up on the prepackaged meals. Neither does the sodium content. As for fish, mentioned by Theresa, you still do better visiting someplace like Reading Terminal Market (for example).
Trader Joe's is great for "staples" like tea (I am a big green tea advocate), homeopathic remedies (Gypsy Cold Care is a great herbal tea blend & it really does work), maple syrup, chocolate,whole grain things (oatmeal, bran, wheat, etc), dry pasta,salsa, and odd things like their generic brand of ibuprofen is a great deal.
Basically, I am a "flyer shopper", or that is my main reason for shopping- the things in the flyer match a grocery wish list.
Trader Joes overall is ideal for the pre-packaged gourmet, not the serious health minded chef

The prices are great, and the quality is pretty consistent, though occasionally I have bought a prepared sauce or baked good I didn't like much, or some frozen fish that wasn't up to Trader Joe's usual standards. They make these frozen Thai dumplings that are a staple in our house.
Posted by: Laurie on September 13, 2004 07:09 PMI love that place. I'm eating so much healthier since they opened the one at 22nd and Market. When it first opened I thought I'd only go there to shop for special occasions but I go weekly now and I could easily go more often.
I don't buy any of their prepackaged meals but their healthy snacks, vitamins, mineral water, yogurt, soy milk and certain staples (extra virgin olive oil $5!!) make it more than worthwhile. I like their selection of wholegrain baked products too.
If you bake, their dark chocolate is every bit as good as the much more expensive imported stuff like callebaut. I'm hooked.
