JENICE: I didn't sign up for the Philadelphia Distance Run half marathon, basically because I thought it was going to be too arduous. I hadn't been especially diligent about training, and hadn't even run in about a week and a half. But then, when I got up on Sunday, the sun was shining so brightly that I decided just to go watch. As I stood along the side of the road cheering, I got so inspired watching the racers run past, that I joined in at the Art Museum and ended up doing the rest of the race. I must have run about 11 miles, my longest distance since the last time I participated. Of course, now, I'm kicking myself for not having run the whole thing. I could have done it. Oh, well. At least I got a good run out of it. The experience also reinforced an old lesson: Just as in life, when it comes to tackling an athletic endeavor, you've got to push past negative thinking and just do it.
THERESA: Way to go, Jenice! I'm with you, I don't want to miss this race next year. (However, I can't push myself to risk running such a long distance when I haven't been training for it.) Yvonne Dennis ran it. Congratulations to her and everyone who ran.

Wow, Jenice, that's impressive! You are obviously in great shape, even if you weren't training specifically for a marathon. I agree so much of it is mental attitude, but I also think there must be something to having a fitness habit -- a steady level of training over a long time. I know you do a lot of different things to stay in shape. Being consistent seems more important than being intense about it. Or at least that's my impression from my own experiences.
So *that's* what all those people were doing running down Kelly Drive. My daughter (18 months) and I walked down and watched and it was an unbelievable mass of people participating. They just kept coming.
Congratulations, Jenice, on running as much of it as you did. That's a LONG way to run, in my opinion!

In the running world you participated as a "bandit" if you were not registered. "Bandits" are the scourge of organized races because they utilize the resources of the race without paying.

During the race, the half marathoners were mostly in the street. Because I hadn't registered, I made a concious effort to separate myself from them. It was kind of obvious that I wasn't a part of the group. Also, I was nowhere near the start line of the race. And, no, I didn't take a medal at the end. My decision to run that morning was purely a spontaneous act sparked by excitement at seeing so many magnificent runners. Next year, you can believe that I'll not only register but run the entire race.
Oh, and hi, Dave! I miss you. I'm still trying to implement all the things you taught me about working out and eating right. And, hey, Kevin! What are you up to these days? I know it's something interesting. Are you still doing judo and that Brazilian form of martial arts?
