THERESA: My husband Dave wants us to try the South Beach diet. I don't know much about it, except that people seem to get good results from it. I don't think diets in general are a good idea, but some elements of this one make sense. You cut out sweets and refined sugar, eat mostly protein in the first couple weeks to lose your cravings for sugar, then add back in whole grains and vegetables and fruits and wind up with what sounds like a pretty balanced, healthy diet. Bye bye, pasta and bread, I guess. Here's a Web site that describes the basics.
Anyone tried it?
WENDY: Guess I shouldn't have just given Theresa an oatmeal-chocolate-chip cookie!
YVONNE W: I started the diet on Monday (September 13) because I was impressed with the weight loss of one of our colleagues. I am in Day 9 of Phase I. I've been pretty diligent about following the instructions, however, I cheated a little at a barbecue on Sunday.
I don't think the diet is for everyone. You can have meat (sirloin), seafood (all types of shellfish), dairy (cheese and eggs) and dessert. There's definitely enough food to eat from day to day. The main reason I chose this diet is my addiction to sugar (especially candy and carbonated flavor water). I'm now drinking tea and healthy juices with less calories and sugar.
The first 2 weeks are the most difficult, however there are quite a few food choices. The foods to be avoided are clearly identified in the book. After 2 weeks you can add bread, fruit and other food choices. I don't like to cook, however, I do have to prepare most of the meals. The biggest surprise for me is how much I like the recipes. The food is "Good". I will probably continue to use the recipes.
I've lost weight, actually more than I'm comfortable with in such a short period of time. I'm not interested in quick weight loss for an extended period. So once my two weeks are over I'll move on to Phase II. Many people continue Phase I because they like the rapid weight loss. I just want to lose a few pounds at a steady rate and include proper nutrition in my daily eating plan. I want to continue to eat well balanced meals that are nutritional and full of flavor.
I don't really like diets. I hope to incorporate healthy eating into my lifestyle. I don't want to feel deprived. I don't recommend any diet. That's a personal choice. Just try to make smart healthy choices.
DIANE: I'm not a big fan of the first two weeks. Anyone will lose weight through calorie deprivation, which is what any food restrictive diet actually is, in my opinion. So my rule of thumb is….Can you live with this meal plan for a lifetime? If so, it may work for you. If not, going back to old habits will bring the weight back on. As a side note, I personally don’t want to live without pasta or bread! All in moderation, folks!
I tried it for six days, didn't lose an ounce, and stopped. I don't eat a lot of carbs and sweets to start with, so it didn't seem to work for me -- although I have heard anecdotes about other people who started slow and then lost a lot of weight. I'm generally opposed to any diets on principle.
And the latest studies that came out today about the Mediterranean lifestyle once again prove what we already know and want to avoid having to accept: eat more fruits and vegetables and less meat, exercise, don't smoke, have a little bit of alcohol. All the serious studies basically show the same thing, in my opinion, but we typically want to find some magic formula to take off weight. Of course, I might add, that I follow the Meditteranean diet pretty naturally, and STILL CAN'T LOSE THESE DAMN TEN EXTRA POUNDS. But I'll apparently have longer to keep trying because I'll live longer, right?
Does the last 10 pounds really matter, in terms of overall health?
Posted by: Wendy on September 22, 2004 10:41 AMMaybe not, but it sure matters to me in terms of overall getting-into-my-clothes.
Posted by: Jill on September 22, 2004 10:46 AMLife's too short to sweat 10 pounds. How many times have you felt fat, only to see a photo of yourself years later and wonder what on earth were you thinking?
I'm with Jill. I think it's good to have a definite maximum weight limit in your mind -- 10 pounds over your personal "I-love-how-I-look" ideal seems about right to me-- and when you hit that weight (yikes) you know it-- your jeans feel too snug, you don't like the way you look. And you feel determined to get back where you like to be. The alternative is just to let things creep out of control until --Oops!-- now you're 20 pounds over where you want to be. Then 30. As long as you don't have an unrealistic idea of how skinny you should be, I think it's OK to aim to lose that "last 10 pounds."
Posted by: Theresa on September 22, 2004 10:58 AMI haven't tried it, but there's this other guy who has - Bill Clinton.

Just sayin'.
Posted by: Vance on September 22, 2004 10:59 AMInteresting. But bear in mind that Clinton was also a jogger. I doubt his jogging contributed to his heart troubles. The link you point out states that "convenient as it may be to blame the South Beach Diet – which allows people to eat more meat and fat than, say a Mediterranean-style diet – that’s probably not fair. After all, Clinton himself has conceded that he probably had genetics working against him, as well as a longtime passion for fast food. And despite the fact that he was an avid jogger and golfer even while in the White House, it was well known that weight control may have been a tougher issue for him than arms control."
The evening news reported last week that Bill Clinton did not take his cholesterol medication. So, that may have been part of his problem.
Posted by: yvonne W. on September 22, 2004 12:50 PMNow that I have my personal training business and make my home in Miami, I hear about this diet more than any other. It does have some very good concepts to it although I don't agree with the no fruit during the first phase of the diet. Keep in mind that if you wnat to loose that last 10 pounds you should be kicking your workout into a higher gear at the same time you are putting more focus into your nutrition.
Posted by: David A. Miller on September 22, 2004 01:35 PMI actually lost that cursed 10 pounds when I couldn't eat earlier this year.
I have managed to keep it MOSTLY off, though it's hard. (It was originally 15 pounds lost, but five of those came back the minute I could chew again!) Thing was, I never, never, never would have had the willpower to reduce my food consumption to the level and for the length of time it took to lose the weight if I hadn't had a physical problem. I fully expect that this time next year, I could be wearing that extra 10 once more, though I think the way I lost it might make it a little easier to keep it off.
My weight dropped fast and suddenly but only after several months on my food-deprivation forced diet. Which, coincidentally, cut out almost all bread and pasta, though I did have lots of veggie and fruit juices, and carbs such as oatmeal and cornbread.
I now weigh myself every day and when my weight creeps up 2 or 3 pounds, I try to diet. That, for me simply means eating less and exercising more. If I can manage that, it always works
I'm really tired of fighting that last little bit of weight.
Posted by: Jenice on September 22, 2004 01:39 PMI agree with Dianne (moderation in all things). The question is can you eat that way for a life time and the answer is most likely --NO. What about exercise? It really takes a comprehensive approach for optimal results.
Posted by: Kimberly on September 22, 2004 05:12 PMWhy are men posting here? This is supposed to be a women's only page.
Posted by: Jane on September 22, 2004 09:50 PMActually, no, it's not.
Posted by: admin on September 23, 2004 09:48 AMWe don't mind at all if men post on the site.
Posted by: Theresa on September 23, 2004 10:58 AMThis is a women's locker room though. Men need to invade even this space too? How were they able to get here without forging their info? why not just call it "lockerroom" then?
