USA Today is reporting that the Atkins folks are aiming to gain a foothold in schools. This is creating controversy, as you might expect, but I gotta say, it can't be as bad as soda companies and candy vendors hawking their products in schools. What do you all think?
YVONNE: Hate to sound like a broken record, but we have to stop teaching ourselves and the next generation to think about food in catch phrases and gimmicks. Balanced diet of mostly healthful options and ocassional treats is what we should all be aiming for, in the portions that are right for us. Atkins in school I think is a bad idea. School is a time for athletics and athletes need protein as well as carbs.
JILL: I think it's outragous for any commercial diet-think to be pushed in schools and I'd go crazy if they tried it at my kid's school. I totally agree with Yvonne.
KIMBERLY: This is definitely a bad idea (as bad as candy and soda companies). Kids need to learn the foundation of good nutrition and Atkins is anything but that.

The Atkins Diet is just that, a DIET. Children need to learn how to eat properly for a lifetime, not how to go on a diet. The child obesity problem is reaching epidemic levels. There needs to be a change in the food that is served in the school lunch rooms. Children should be required to take at least one course on basic nutrition so they will have a better knowledge of how they should be eating.

Posted by: Constance on October 3, 2004 01:39 PMi, being a kid who is not obese, think that kids my age just have to get out and excersise! Don't worry about all the fat just get out and excersise! Subway sux, and so does atkins. Eat more vegetables and fruit and get out and excersise!

Atkins is basically saying that what we've been taught is a balanced diet really isn't so. Balanced doesn't mean 1/3 carbs, 1/3 fat, and 1/3 protien. It is more about eating in a way that balances out our internal systems, like insulin.
Atkins very much promotes exercise in conjunction with the 'diet'.
The Atkins approach is not of a 'diet', but is primarily interested in making sure it is something that is easy to stay on for life. With more and more companies making snacks that support Atkins (just as they did when low-fat was the craze) this will help.
Atkins is not about carb-elimination. It is about getting rid of 'technology foods' and harnessing the proven health benefits of increasing non-trans fats into the daily diet.
This was all out of memory. This info is in the book and web-site. I hate to sound like an ass, but people really should open the book and do some actual research on the product they're bashing before passing on info they heard from 'pre-historic' research (which is now losing ground every day by newer and better research).
the Atkins diet is another hollywood fad. Dr Atkins himself died obese! ..so think twice before dieting.
i'm in school and where i live, the Atkins diet is non-existent and will probably be in the next hundred years. just eat healthily, and exercise.
