KIMBERLY: Theresa, just wanted to let you know that you have inspired me to begin a running program. For the past 12 weeks I've been running 5-8 miles daily on the treadmill. Eventually I want to run one of those 5K races with you and April. I would also like to commit myself to doing fitness charities going into '05. At some point I'll have to run out doors I suppose.
THERESA: If we went for a run outside, you'd do great. Fall is a great time of year to run outside. If you can do 5 to 8 miles on a treadmill, you'd have no trouble with a 5K race.
KIMBERLY: You think? Running on a treadmill is different from running outside. I would love to organize a Girlfriend run on the Forbidden Drive. It's beautiful back there. However, I don't think it's safe to run back there solo. What do you think about that? Maybe we could all get together early one Saturday or Sunday morning?
JENICE: Hey, I'm slow, but I'd love to join you guys. I always need a little extra motivation to get me going when it's nippy out like it has been. How far a run should we do? And Sundays are best for me.
THERESA: And don't forget the 7-mile Mount Hope Distance Classic, coming up Nov. 6 at the Mount Hope Winery near Lancaster. That's been good motivation for me.
DIANE: My trainers talked me into running a 5K last Sunday at Kerr Park in Downingtown. I was just going to cheer them on, but they cajoled me into running. I finished in 32 minutes, I was really proud of myself, as I am not a runner at all! It inspired me to continue to run at different events. I just need to get some orthopedic issues ironed out. Maybe I could join you guys some day.
Forbidden Drive on Saturday and Sunday mornings seems perfectly safe for running alone. I do -- and see lots of other women out as well. Usually starting from the Lincoln Drive end between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. There are almost always lots of runners, walkers and bikers out, and this time of year, lots of track teams training. Wissahickon Runners run in groups on Sunday mornings there I think. By later morning it's really jumping. It gets a little less busy once the mornings get really cold -- but I'm not sure I've ever seen it deserted.
However, as I have commented here before -- there is NEVER a police presence. Only time I'm seen a cop on Forbidden DRive is one on a bike accompanying the mayor!!! yeah -- like he needs protection while he's biking.
They guard the parking lot at Valley Green -- always a real dangerous spot.
Anyway -- that makes me mad, but I run anyway.
