How fit is fit?

THERESA: Are you as fit as you think? Maybe not. Check out the latest column by our own Kimberly Garrison, in which she states that even if you exercise, you may not actually be fit. "You probably use the terms 'fitness' and 'health' interchangeably, but they are not synonymous." she writes. "Many people think fitness is flat abs and being skinny - the proverbial size 2. Others think fitness is the ability to walk on a treadmill for hours, or lift heavy weights, or twist oneself into a pretzel. They're all wrong. Fitness is best defined by the efficiency of your physiology. For example, how easily can you run, jump or lift your own body weight? Fitness grows with progressive training and decays at about 3 percent a day if you do not maintain a level of appropriate training."

After reading her column, are you motivated to modify your training in any way, Girlfriends?

JILL: I've noticed at the gym that there are people who use the machines who don't break a sweat and seem to stay at the same level of effort all the time. My instinct, which Kimberly I think is upholding, is that if you don't push yourself, you aren't gaining too much. I try to up the weight load on a regular basis to make sure I'm achieving some gain. Although I have to assume that the cardio workout is effective regardless of effort, no? In other words, you don't have to continually up your pace to get the benefits, if you're already working at a reasonably high intensity?

APRIL: I have to say I agree with Kimberly - because she proved to me that I'm not fit! After training with her and doing exercises designed to push and pull my own body weight, I realized that despite how many miles you run or free weights you lift, you may not be exercising your body's fitness potential. I was unable to easily do chin ups, sit-ups (not the wimpy Kathy Smith half sit ups I love with my hands behind my head, Kimberly had me doing sit-ups with no hands, lifting my entire weight up to my knees.) Needless to say I need work.

I think I'm fit for my age. I have great flexibility and stamina. I believe that is achieved thru Pilates (great for stretching), jogging (releases tension and anxiety), dancing (great for a positive attitude and endurance).

I like to tell myself that I am fit, that my normal level of activity keeps me in shape. But I know I am fooling myself -- particularly after our Dragon Boat experience, which ALMOST KILLED ME! Kimberly, you gotta be on our team next year...

When I read what Kimberly wrote it made me realize my ideas on fitness were very wrong. It's making me work harder at the stuff I do to push myself and not be complacent. I know my upper body is not fit - that's why I end up with neck and shoulder pain and back pain, my chiropractor tells me.

As usual Kimberly is right on the money. As a personal trainer it pains me see so many people in the gym who are not getting the results that they should simply because they either don't push their self enough or they are doing things incorrectly. EVERYONE should schedule a session with a CERTIFIED personal trainer at least once or twice a year just to make sure you are getting the most from your workouts.
