THERESA: I admit to being a fan of the ABC show "Wife Swap" (I know, I know, I can hear some of you snorting as I type this!!!) Did anyone happen to catch it last night? The show should be called "Mom Swap," as it involves moms who trade homes for a couple of weeks and get to impose their rules on somebody else's family. I think it's an entertaining window into the true cultural divide in America, OK?
Anyway, last night a fitness and healthy-food fanatic from California (a terrible housekeeper, by the way) traded with a pretty sedentary mom from Florida (great housekeeper) who never fed her family anything but microwave entrees and fast food. The muscle-bound, gym-rat mom got her temporary family working out, eating fresh food (which they hated at first) while the heavy-set, Florida mom wound up working out at the gym and biking with her temporary husband. It was clear that the dad in the fast-food household had little patience for the California woman, but his kids really came to enjoy getting off their behinds to get involved in karate and other activities.
It's amazing how different we all are...
LAURIE:
I always think that standing in the supermarket check-out line, looking at what people buy.
I haven't seen the show, but agree it should be called "Mom Swap." "Wife Swap" would have been a good alternative name for Melrose Place back in the day.
Posted by: April on November 4, 2004 03:18 PMI have seen this show once or twice and it is simply proof positive that women have so much power and influence on our families. Mom's are the ambassadors of fitness, health, nutrition, and excellence. If the Mother makes fitness and health a priority then the family will follow.
Posted by: Kimberly Garrison on November 4, 2004 04:55 PMI’m a first time watcher and missed a little bit of the beginning of the show. The Florida Mom felt that the CA household was cold and unfeeling, but her family really soaked up all the attention that the CA Mom gave them -- after the initial whining. I think they enjoyed the attention and being challenged.
I never got a feel for how the CA kids felt without their Mom. I’m certain they begrudged being banned from their athletic activities, but I’m not certain whether their Mom’s absence was looked at as all bad, i.e. getting a break from her strict regiment of food, chores, wake up times, etc.
If this was a game and I got to judge how the parents did overall, I’d go with the CA Mom over the FL Mom and the FL Dad over the CA Dad.
That CA Mom certainly made me think about eating more green vegetables.
I think it is a great thing that the one mother got the family to eat right and exercise, but do you think these changes remain after that mother leaves?
