THERESA: I had lunch yesterday with a friend who moved here recently from California; she misses hiking in the mountains out West. Any suggestions for good places she should check out? The Appalachian Trail is not too far, and even closer to home are the trails of Fairmount Park and the Wissahickon. Are there are other areas you all can suggest?
JILL: Valley Green is a wonderful place to walk/hike. Also, an hour and a half away, in Lambertville or the New Hope area, there's a path along the canal that's just beautiful, if not strenuous. It's like being in the French countryside, and it's so close.
A friend of mine has a book about hikes in Pennsylvania. Your friend may want to get a copy.
THERESA: Here's a title I found on Amazon: "Great Hikes in the Poconos and Northeast Pennsylvania" by Boyd and Linda Newman.
LAURIE: The Pine Barrens in New Jersey is a very unique environment, unlike anything anywhere - even in California. Canoeing and kayaking are more the method to explore this area, but there is hiking, too. Here's one Web site.
Also lovely for flat hiking - a very East Coast sort of meander through historic countryside - are the canals along both sides of the Delaware River in Bucks County. Beautiful this time of year. Very flat, straight and well-maintained trails. You can drive along River Road in Bucks and there are places to park and get on the trails.
Not exactly Yosemite, but some great restaurants to go to in Lambertville once you're done hiking! I would recommend Hamilton's Grill Room and Manon, two lovely BYOBs. (You can see the kind of hiker I am.)
THERESA: April and I took a long, long run once on the canal trail near Lambertville. It is just beautiful. Good suggestion.
APRIL: That was a great run. It's gorgeous at this time of the year near New Hope.
Correction time! While I agree that Delaware Canal State Park WAS a great place to walk (emphasis on was), most of it is closed and will be closed indefinately thanks to the trouble twins, Ivan and Jeanne. The New Jersey side (D&R Canal State Park) is still open, as far as I know. (But don't quote me on that-- I haven't been over there lately).
My suggestion for a hike would be Tyler Arboretum (www.tylerarbortum.org) They have several trails, including a "ten-mile" trail that goes around most of the property. (It's actually more like 8 miles, but who's counting.) It's also a place for history buffs, since it was owned by eight generations of the same family from a William Penn land grant.

There is a five mile paved route around the park, but inside and outside the loop are off road trails for hikers only--no mountain bikes allowed. Also in Ridley you can bring your dog. There are no dogs allowed in Tyler.
