BARBARA, arts, educational & cultural consultant:
Many Americans suffer from thyroid imbalance, and I am one of them. Several years ago, I was feeling rundown, sleepy, depressed, overwhelmed and irritable.
My sleeping habits were poor. And every day after work, I would go home and go to bed. I shared my symptoms with my doctor who ordered blood tests and a subsequent visit to a specialist called an endocrinologist.
The endocrinologist determined that I had calcium in my urine and problems with my parathyroid glands. After a biopsy, I learned that one of my parathyroid glands might be cancerous. Surgery was recommended to alleviate the threat of cancer.
I am a singer and the thought of throat surgery frightened me. My colleague had had the same surgery, and it damaged her vocal chords. I was concerned that the same thing might happen to me.
However, my husband convinced me that detecting cancer at an early stage was paramount, and I had the surgery. During the process, half of my thyroid and two of my parathyroid glands were removed.
My symptoms improved after surgery, and I started taking a Synthroid-type pill daily. I felt better and began doing things I hadn't done before. However, thyroid awareness and management is an ongoing endeavor. Although my surgery went well, not everyone with thyroid disease needs or opts for it.
The complexity of thyroid problems can prevent proper diagnosis and treatment, and far too many physicians lack the understanding and the expertise necessary to treat this disorder.
If you think you have thyroid disease, see a doctor. If you know you have a thyroid imbalance, become proactive with your personal thyroid management plan. The key is to do your own research. There is lots of patient information available online and at bookstores. Here are some recommendations taken from the book, “The Thyroid Solution,” by Dr.Ridha Arem, Chapter 18, Living a Thyroid-Friendly Life: Healthful Choices Day by Day.
Important Points to Remember:
Dear Barbara,
This is my first time checking out your column and it is great! It is also good to know that surgery is not the only option since, I suspect there is a genetic component to this. My mother and at least two of my uncles have already had to have surgery. Anyway, keep up the good work.
take care,
Mary D.

Posted by: ashley on October 1, 2003 01:46 AMI had my thyroid removed about 15 years ago (Graves Disease) and am taking thyroid replacement. I have to tell my doctor when I think the dosage needs changing (approximately once or twice a year)and I have been on .l mg, .l25 mg and .l5 mg. I believe he is making too drastic a change when he goes from the .l mg to .l5 mg. What are the dangers from not having this dosage correct?

Posted by: katrina on February 5, 2004 12:50 PMHello. I have been on Synthroid 50mcg since i've been diagnosed with hypothyroidism for the last 6 months. I am also an RN working my nights in the ER three to four nights a week. I take my Synthroid every morning, and go to bed during the day when i work the night before. However i noticed that i can sleep for 12-14 hours continuously and not even feel an appetite to eat all day. (I am really underweight as well...under 110lbs and 5'3'') Whether i am off from work or not...I noticed that i dont have any appetite to eat in the daytime, feel depressed in and out...i dont know why my doctor doesnt understand these symptoms and treat me accordingly. Im wondering if the depressed moods and poor eating and sleeping habits have to do with working at night or is it part of my disease process? Need some advice what i should do! THanks so much!
Posted by: Sim on March 12, 2004 09:13 PMI recently went to the doctor with symptoms of extreme fatigue, grouchiness and difficulty losing weight. I also had extremely dry skin. I found out that I have a goiter and my TSH level is slightly elevated at 5.2. I've read different things about when to start taking Synthroid. What are your thoughts? My doctor feels that this level is acceptable but I disagree. It's too high, right? Please share with me your thoughts.
Posted by: sherry on March 13, 2004 01:03 PMI had my thyroid removed last May and I still have a lot of the symtoms. I still feel tired, weight gain, no memory what so ever. How long does it take for the medication to really show it's working. Just recently I have had regular periods (which I have not had in over 8 years) and no I finally seem to be having a bowel movement on a more regular pace. But I still feel way over weight (I exercise 5 X's a week)and I can loss any weight. I feel real tired after I exercise and I have no strength in any of my muscles any more. What can I do?
