Keeping it Real with The Philadelphia Police Community Relations Unit

10 TIPS FROM POLICE FOR OUTDOOR EXERCISERS

Philadelphia is a great place to exercise outdoors, with more than 100 miles of trails in Fairmount Park alone. Park rangers, bike police and other officers abound to provide information and ensure safety, but there are things individuals can do to help.

The Philadelphia Police Community Relations Unit has several tips to help outdoor exercisers avoid becoming victims of crime.

  • If it is possible, go with a friend

  • Try to avoid short cuts through vacant lots, wooded areas, parking lots or alleys.

  • Let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return.

  • Carry your purse close to the body. No dangling straps.

  • If you carry a wallet, put it in a front pocket, not back pocket.

  • Stay alert, especially if you are listening to music. Know your surroundings. Individuals should be realistic about their own limitations and avoid situations that can put them at risk.

  • Know the areas or neighborhood where you exercise, live and work.

  • Avoid establishing predictable habits or patterns.

  • If it makes you feel more comfortable, carry pepper spray or Mace. But police don’t suggest weapons such as knives or guns "because if you get overtaken you can be hurt by those."

  • Wear clothes that can be seen in the dark.

  • Call 911 to report suspicious activity.
