Everything seemed in place for the Man of Steel to steal this summer's Movie Madness competition. No previous summer flick had yet broken from the pack, and "Superman" was the beneficiary of good reviews, a holiday weekend and a lot of rain.
But, oh, that 150-minute running time. Or maybe it was the "Superman Is Gay" stories. Or the "Superman is Jesus" stories. Whatever, the man who can bust blocks with his fists didn't put up the blockbuster numbers everyone expected with an estimated $52.6 million opening three-day weekend.
Will it have legs?
'Cars' didn't have the killer opening weekend either, but its slow-and-steady pace has earned it a trip to the finals over the higher-grossing "Da Vinci Code" and "X-Men: The Last Stand."
The other movie to move ahead this week is "The Devil Wears Prada," whose suprising $27 million opening crushed the opening weekend of "The Lake House."
Now, all eyes turn to "Pirates," opening this Friday.
Mediocre performance is no surprise considering Lex Luthor's big villanous plan is a real estate scam. Yawn. This is a super hero movie, right?
Posted by: Walt B. at July 5, 2006 11:16 AMI expected more from Superman Returns and was disappointed when that didn't come to pass. It was good, but should've been great. Brandon Routh did well as Clark/Superman (the revamped costume sucked), but Kevin Spacey didn't impress as Luthor who's still jonesing over real estate. Kate Bosworth was totally forgettable as Lois, ditto for Frank Langella (Perry White) and James Mardsen (Lois' boy toy). Like I said, the movie should have been spectacular, yet it simply wasn't.
Posted by: Jeffrey Branch at July 10, 2006 07:38 AMMore on Superman returns.
It's one thing to pay homage to a popular movie from the past, but Bryan Singer clearly overdid it here. From employing the same music from the original, some of the same lines, dragging Marlon Brando's image out of mothballs to a variation of Lex Luthor's land grab plot, it was too much copying and not enough originality for my taste.
Like I said previously, Superman Returns should have been spectacular, but it wasn't, and Singer's homage overdose was part of why it came up short. To me, a sure fire sign that I loved a movie I saw in the theater is that I can't wait for it to come out on DVD so I can add it to my collection. Just as Peter Jackson's remake of King Kong came up woefully short, I'm not sure Superman Returns will find its way into my video library.
