A small Canadian town has proposed a monument to those young men who put their lives on the line during the Vietnam War: Yes, the draft protesters.
But not everyone is fond of the idea. President Bush (whose Vietnam record speaks for itself); the VFW; many, but not all, Vietnam veterans; and a host of other outraged humans have lambasted the town of Nelson over the idea.
John Furgess, the national commander of the 2.4-million-member VFW, called the proposal "an abomination."
But what about those 125,000 Americans who stood firm in their belief that the war was wrong and who then acted on that belief? Left their families, their friends, and moved to the Great North Wilderness to survive on berries and tree bark until President Carter offered amnesty in 1977?
They seem to have lost to the warmongers again. Now the town is talking about putting up a peace monument, of all things.
If the draft dodgers weren't against war, we think they'd have a right to invade Nelson and start one. What a snub!
Peace, indeed.
