Ed Mahlman
Chief Marketing Officer
Ed joined Philadelphia Media Holdings, LLC in 2006 as Chief Marketing Officer responsible for The Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Daily News, philly.com and other newspaper properties and online products. Ed brings 30 years of branding and retail advertising experience with companies and organizations such as Verizon, Sunoco, the Pennsylvania Lottery, Deloitte Consulting, Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) and more.
Prior to joining PMH, he served as Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Lottery for 3½ years. Responsible for all marketing, financial, operational and security functions during this period, Ed increased Lottery sales from $1.9 billion to $3.1 billion – the most dramatic increase in sales in the Lottery’s modern era. During Ed’s tenure, the Pennsylvania Lottery was consistently among U.S. growth leaders. He developed an innovative program which halted a 16-year decline in the number of retail outlets. The resulting 20% increase in the retailer count – along with fundamental improvements to instant ticket products -- was key to the dramatic growth from 2003 through 2006.
Earlier, Ed had a variety of account management positions over a 25-year career at Tierney Communications, the Interpublic Group office in Philadelphia. Before accepting his position as Lottery Director in Harrisburg, Ed was serving as Director of Client Services at the agency, responsible for daily management for clients such as the Pennsylvania Lottery, Verizon, ARAMARK, Cedar Fair Entertainment ( Dorney Park) and others.
His strength in problem identification has been a key to developing effective communications programs: Lottery sales growth; dramatic increases in unaided awareness of Deloitte Consulting from 1% to 26%; 90% usage for Verizon Yellow Pages products; record-breaking attendance at Dorney Park, and more.
Prior to this, Ed held a variety of positions at Rohm and Haas Company, rising to brand manager for Plexiglas brand predicts.
Ed and his wife reside in the Mt. Airy section of Philadelphia, where he has participated in many community events. He is a board member of the Center for Literacy and past board member of the National Adoption Center. A cum laude graduate of Saint Joseph’s University, he also holds an M.S. in Journalism from the Boston University College of Communication.
